After the wonderful and emotionally fortified doom/death metal debut album "Serenades", Daren White, singer of Anathema, leaves the band not the peaceful way. This is the moment when one of the two guitarists of Anathema, Vincent Cavanagh, will replace Wight on the microphone. The vocals of Vincent are, in my opinion, more intense than Wight's and they pace wonderfully with the lyrics and the music of "The Silent Enigma".

I'll be honest, I haven't listened to The Silent Enigma in its entirety in a while. I remember being so obsessed with this album during my first year of community college, but other Anathema albums that I thought were better were now my daily listening. Three years later, and here I am talking about yet another album from one of my favorite bands.

This is still my favourite Anathema album. The music is beautiful, but, at the same time, heavy and intense. And I really like Vincent's vocals on this record.

Such a shame the band went so immensely downhill after this masterpiece.

This album is amazing, I would probably say that this is my favorite Anathema album, even though I love their other albums as well. So beautiful and enchanting, yet so crushing and desolate at the same time.

EDIT: Judgement's become my favorite as of now, but i still love what this album has to offer.

This is better than both Alternative 4 and Judgement. you can feel emotions through this album. oh and nocturnal emissions if you didn't know means 'coming' while you sleep. now you will forever think of semen when you listen to this album.

I would say this is probably my favorite anathema album.

This is probably it, my favourite of everything.
It is my masterpiece of a glorious death doom era at that time. Best death doom I know of. I grew up with this album.
I wouldnt say they went downhill immensely after this one, but I do think that this is clearly their best album.
It is so distinct, has so many amazing ideas in songwriting, I didnt come to find anything similar at that time.
I can point to four outstanding highlights here: restless oblivion, shroud of frost, the silent enigma, and a dying wish.
Sunset of the age is also very good.
While I find the latest output of Anathema still marginally enjoyable, I have to say I miss their TSE days so much.

I dont know if anyone here is familiar with this feeling, this latent fear that your most beloved album(s) of all time may one day not appeal to you any more with the same overwhelmingness as they once did. When you wont revisit your favourite albums over a period of several years because you kind of feel you dont need to, you know them by heart anyways, each and every note of them. Then you may become afraid you distance yourself from these albums, maybe you dont even want to listen to them anymore that much nowadays. And if that is true, would that be a problem? Do you know the answer to these questions, do you need to have an answer to them?
Today I can tell you, the best thing to do if you know very well what I am talking about here is to just give the album(s) the other respin that they deserve.

How could I have questioned even for an instant that this beauty of an album still today after almost 30 years of listening to it still remains my all-time favourite album of everything!?
Damn, do I feel relieved now!

Dude I relate so much to this! For me it’s mostly finding the time to revisit though. Haven’t listened to this one in a good while, and even though Anathema is favorite band of all time this one was never my favorite, but it is still a very beautiful album and A Dying Wish and Sunset of Age are likely my favorite songs of their Death Doom era.

Very nice, atmospheric and meandering. It's not spell binding or mesmerizing to me but I can see the appeal of the album.
