Do you support your local hard-rocking pub band? I certainly hope so.
Now, would you do the same for another one, of the same average-to-good quality, but who's got the chance to be signed on a label?
Sadly, Bad Bones are pretty average, but they don't pretend to be the 'next big thing' either. They are a hard-rocking band, period. Their influences are pretty classical (Motörhead mostly, KISS, and maybe bit of Thin Lizzy, Backyard Babies and stuff, too), as are their lyrical themes: rock'n'roll, outlaws, girls and booze.
So, after a little introduction track? Well, things start pretty badly. "Modern Times" sounds quite uninspired, with lame vocals to boot. Thankfully it gets better later, like with "Road To R'n'R" and its Motörhead feel. After that, we seem to be dragging ourselves through mid-tempo hard-rocking stuff. It can be pretty quickly boring, honestly. Well, it's not bad, but it's not great either, as the songwriting does feel a bit uninspired. Then again, there's this little acoustic track ("Don't Let The Spirits Get In") that's closing this Family Affair which is really, really nice, quite beautiful indeed.
Jus a word about the sound: it is perfect for the band, clear and well defined but crunchy enough not to sound cold.
The worse thing is, they probably don't deserve so harsh a review, because I'm pretty sure the band had fun recording this album ("No Way Out"), and because I guess the band themselves are good live? Provided we're in their environment, like a biker's convention or a shady bar, with beers for everyone!
