In the history of Metal there have been quite a few bands for whom Metal was more than just playing loud. Metal was an outlet for not just bringing out their pent-up frustrations but also taking on political and social issues. Sodom is one such band. Formed in 1982 they have come a long way from being regarded as a "second-rate Venom with semi-inventive lyrics" to becoming an enormously influential Thrash Metal band. Well, staying on the topic of being regarded as a "second-rate Venom," it was justified to consider them as such during the early stages of their career. All of this would change with the inclusion of their new guitar player - Frank "Blackfire" Gosdzik. He had succeeded in convincing Tom Angelripper to change the lyrical direction of Sodom and to embrace political, social and war themes. This would culminate into Persecution Mania in 1987. The infamous gas-masked mascot of Sodom - "Knarrenheinz" would also make his debut appearance here.

Great, aggressive thrash album. Nuclear winter is one of my favourite thrash metal songs. Even the iron fist cover is good.

Agent Orange is the Sodom for me. Persecution Mania doesn't even come close.

Agent Orange is weaker than this. Tom sounds damn tired in that album.

The trinity of this, Agent Orange and M16 are superior to any trio of albums that any band in thrash has ever released. Damn good teutonic thrash. If only they had a Pleasure to Kill or Darkness Descends fast paced album all other thrash bands would be forced to kiss the ass of Sodom and worship at their throne. That German anthem thing in Bombenhagel is sweet as fuck.

You are not metal enough until you visit Kenya. The cradle of mankind, where man learnt first to work with stones and first enjoyed the sounds produced by banging stones which later influenced metal in all its sounds and genres.

I love Sodom but I find this one kinda hard to get into other than the first three tracks, to me Agent Orange is a massive improvement.

The first half of the album is very good, it starts off well with "Nuclear Winter", "Electrocution", and "Persecution Mania" in particular. I'm not too sure about the "Iron Fist" cover though, it's just ok ish imo. On the other hand the second half of the album is average at best imo. Agent Orange is far more superior to this one IMHO.

No love for Bombenhagel? It is such a teutonic thrash classic.
Second best Sodom album after Agent Orange for me.

Second best Sodom album after Agent Orange for me.

Yes I heard that one again and I like it, it's probably the most aggressive song on the album. I always preferred Kreator in the past to Sodom, but now after some re-listening I would say it's a close call, I'm warming to Sodom more now, I still much prefer Agent Orange to this album though. I've still not listened to M16 in full yet hopefully I will like that as much as this.

I may have neglected on commenting on some of these major records, which doesn't mean that I haven't heard them at least once. If my regular mode is towards finding less known bands and records and commenting on them, some times I take a break from it and go with the big names as well.

Persecution Mania is of course a proper thrash record, not really the average sounding thrash and not even totally similar to other teutonic bands with their sound. Hard to pinpoint exactly what makes makes it different, but I think you'll be able to hear it. Great record that beats many of the underdogs of the genre.
