Without a doubt, Gojira is one of those bands that are being talked about a lot in the metal community these days and with good reason. The Frenchmen are taking part in progressively higher profile tours and their albums are achieving respectable notoriety all over the world, something that is made all the more impressive by the fact that the band's music is far from commercial sounding or easy to digest. The Way Of All Flesh, Gojira's latest album is supposed to be the next step in the band's ascent into super-stardom and I can say with a degree of certainty that it will serve this purpose successfully, even if it is not an entirely flawless release. I wrote in my review of The Link that every Gojira album has a certain atmosphere and feel to it; while the progressive groove/death formula remains, the vibe is ever changing. Well, with The Way Of All Flesh, it doesn't take too long to realize what vibe [band]Gojira are going for: frigid, tundra-like dread. Frontman Joe Duplantier once said in an interview with Total Guitar magazine that the entire album is the band's reflection on the concept of death and its many facets: the taboo of it, the inevitability of it, and the repercussions of it. And considering how doomy and dark much of the record is musically, there's no doubt that this concept had a huge impact on its writing and recording. From the very beginning, the tightly-coiled melodic guitar tapping of "Oroborus" immediately conjures images that suggest both vitality and despair in equal measure, and that's a pattern that continues throughout. But that's not the only tone "Oroborus" sets for the album... it also sets the tone by being an exceptionally high-quality opener for Gojira's best album. Read more ›› |

This album changed my perception of metal - for the better. In my inmost being I was beginning to run dry on music to feed my power-hungry, musical soul....and then this came along. Gojira have something that is quintessential metal: POWER. Speed and flashiness are cool traits to have in metal but power is the key. There are many passages in this album that are packed with power. 'The Art of Dying' is an amazing song. Great album.

Great music, Great tracks throughout except for maybe Yama's Messengers which is a bit dull in my opinion. Fantastic album regardless. Wolf Down The Earth is one of my all-time favorite metal tracks, dat brige <3

Their albums began losing their identity starting with this one. Occasionally there can be some boring riffs, but most of the album is great.

Might need a relisten, but I struggled to appreciate this album. The riffs are creative, but I just found them to be a bit too repetitive.

This album has quickly turned me into a Gojira fan! This is the style of From Mars to Sirius perfected! Every song here has incredible riffs, atmosphere, powerful singing, and of course the great drumming  There's so much greatness to choose from here: the eerie outro of "Esoteric Surgery", the menacing intro of "Vacuity", the title track, "The Art of Dying"... But for me what takes the cake is the tapping intro riff of "Oroborus" - simply legendary!

It's wild to me how vastly superior this album sounds in comparison to From Mars To Sirius. It's like a day and night difference. I don't understand how people can like that one more than this album. From Mars To Sirius is passable and, at times, boring. The Way Of All Flesh is divine (especially the second half starting with "The Art of Dying"). Sorry, it just had to be said...
