Encountering the influence of post-rock within the confines of doom metal isn't a commonality, as the prevalence of generic tendencies that seem so entrenched in doom would make such claims seem superficial and false. As the title indicates, Passage Of Gaia possesses a lush and vibrant individuality of sound that unusually projects the general despondency of a genre in a palpably fresh way. Original life and inspiration springs here.

This 'sounds' like doom metal most of the time. 'Feels' like atmospheric/post rock most of the time. It took me many listens to actually appreciate it and further more to like it. I this this could be an ideal how simplicity can be layered to sound amazing with excellent song writing. There is a lot of originality here too from what I've heard. This is definitely a music for the patient listeners.

Fuck I thought it was just odd and boring.. The tone of the guitar doomy but - icy but not screechy to give me a headache. The drum tone and patterns tasted metal but again an icy reverb trailing the hits sharply. The Vocalsm single and mixed were for the most part very soothing - Anathema-tic? (weather systems, WHBWH etc). As I said it took lot of listens to familiarize myself and like this sound.

Arctic Sleep. What an apt name to the sound. With respect to this records sound - that's pretty genius if you ask me.

The downside is that the songwriting almost follows a pattern of verse/chorus repeated and ends with a doomy or proggy riff-fest equivalent to a breakdown of sorts that builds up like a cyclone as it proceeds with ice-cold relentlessness till it comes to a standstill.
This does get tiring since it's not nearly as memorable as the song itself rather just acts like improvisation to conclude the song. This is a cool thing but, for every song? That is something I'd call linkin park syndrome. I'm not saying it's not well done but it does kill the individuality a little of the otherwise unique songs.

All in all a fine investment of time. Fav song - Green Dragon. But no weak songs. I feel I could without Terra Vindicta for not being as emotionally compelling as the rest.
