Released in 1992 Tiamat's third full album saw another line-up change. This time the keyboardist Kenneth Roos was added to the band and the bassist Jörgen Thulberg was replaced by ex-Sorceror Johnny Hagel.

With the 'Clouds' album Tiamat took another step forward on the ladder of musical evolution. Melodic and acoustic guitars added on 'The Astral Sleep' are heard more often, lyrics and the vocals play a big part in an overall impression. Growling vocals are becoming rare and one must admit that Edlund has improved his singing skills to emphasize his unique raspy voice even more. And this time the listener is given a chance to hear the content of the songs without much effort which I find to be a very positive change.

What, no comments here!?!
This is a masterpiece! It is clearly the best album by a (used-to-be) great band.
I even prefer it to the highly-praised Wildhoney. Clouds is much darker and more intense.
Favourite songs: The sleeping beauty, Undressed and of course A caress of stars.
Compared to those days, it is actally sad to see what happened to this band.
Up to Prey all their albums were still pretty good I would say (though of course not comparable to their good-old doom-death days).
Thereafter they went downhill pretty fast.

This is one time where I can say its like death/doom or close, doomsters can like it its not anymore death metal, its melodies and bit artistic song writing, more complex and also 90's old school studio work what is not super HD but old school what makes that sound better.

A true masterpiece and almost flawless, but if you are very honest, one can't deny that the weakness of Johan Edlund's voice shows on some tracks. I never bothered that his voice didn't meet generic DM-standards, maybe that even made it kinda special. But I can not stop wondering how gorgeous this might have been with a stronger voice, less nasality and less Swedish accent.

Anyway, first world problemes like these cease to excist listening to timeless classics like "A Caress Of Stars" and "The Scapegoat".

I'm old enough to have listened to this album back when it was relased. It used to be a 10/10 album in my book. But now I'm not that crazy about it. Music-wise it still holds up, mostly, but what does not hold up is the vocals. It seems that Johan Edlund wasn't 100% sure whether he still wanted to growl here or not. As a result, it's Tiamat's weakest release when it comes to singing.

<Controversial point warning>
"Wildhoney" is vastly superior to this album, and then "A Deeper Kind of Slumber" is vastly superior to "Wildhoney". I'd much rather hear one more album like "A Deeper Kind Of Slumber" than "The Astral Sleep" and "Clouds" put together.
