Simply put Heavy Bass and Groove Death Metal from England. Those Once Loyal there last album was amazing. There earlier work is also very impressive. They've had a few to say the least line up changes, but they have stayed fairly consitent in their work. To bad they haven't been in the U.S forever. Really good band that I recommend to any Death Metal fan.

Okay people, you really need to get a discussion going or this thread will be locked. "they're awesome, i listen then all the time" type of post are considered spam so they can be removed anytime and also can cause you a warning so if you're not willing to explain your opinion, why you like them or dislike them don't post at all.

Personally, I'd recommend either "IVth Crusade" or "For Victory"... both of those were their highpoint, in my opinion. Their style is the same as it ever was, only on these discs it's a tad more refined and with better production.

As for the band, they don't sound like Obituary, but Obituary would be a great comparison point. It's more "meat and potatoes" death metal. Very straight forward. Whereas Obituary is groove based, Bolt Thrower just sounds very martial, almost like the advance of a division of tanks.

I remember when I was a small boy looking through some old "White Dwarf" magazines. There was one picture especially which I spent a lot of time looking at. A bunch of futuristic soldiers were gathered in the middle of it, shooting in every direction. I remember wanting to be one of those soldiers, fighting for glory, struggling for the right to stay alive. My fantasy was really nourished by this image.
Later, growing up, the memory of so called "Unrealistic fantasies" faded. Then, one day I came across a promo CD featuring various artists. Contained on this CD were a track by a band called "Bolt Thrower" with the song "Inside the Wire". The beat of the heavy drumming and the rhytm of the dark guitars made my heart twirl and all my rage exploded into a non-controlable "headbanging". I was totally amazed by this band and did immediatly begin to collect all the albums I could find. Never had I been that breathtaken by any musical act i´d ever heard. Once i´d gotten the "Realm of Chaos" CD I realized, THAT was the cover I grew up looking at. Crazy!
It must´ve been fate or what do you think?

This band has my respects, i've been listening to them for maybe a year or so and their last album - "Those Once Loyal", although it may sound a bit monotonous, is a real classic, songs like "Those Once Loyal" and "Salvo" are unique, just as the sound of the band itself. Recently i've been listening to their earlier stuff and i can surely say Bolt Thrower has class. Tracks like "Armageddon Bound" and "Inside the Wire" etc. are simply put masterpieces. Hail to BT

WWWWAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRR!!!!!!

From the first moment I heard the weird industrial intro move into the track Eternal War, I was blown away. At that time I was picking up anything on the Earache label, so Realm of Chaos and it's heavy as balls guitar, distinct vocals and chaotic drum style drew me in. Karl Willets has the one of the best death metal vocal style in the fact you can hear every damn word clear as bell, without losing any of the aggression. Andy Whale was for quit some time was one of my fav drummers; he had this 'just keeping it together' sound with his wacky drum rolls, double kick and slowish blast that was easily his own sound.

After that when Warmaster came out with a tuned up guitar tone, clearer production (thanks to the ever improving Colin Richardson... a definite fav!) and even better musicianship, it became clear that this band was up their with my favorites. Oh and Jo Bench in her girdle on the inner gatefold...:)

Next two albums IV crusade and For Victory only improved upon their already established style, and easily set them apart from other death metal bands who were obsessed with being technical and fast, while Bolt Thrower just stuck to solid song writing.

After that I did lose interest, their albums lost a bit of lustre when Whale left, though my interest in death metal in general wained. Needles to say even the weaker of their albums are far above mediocre.

If you think you like death metal, the older style in particular, and you don't have a Bolt Thrower album, then you're doing yourself a disfavor. Realm of Chaos, Warmaster, IVth Crusade and For Victory are all essential.

I ment most of their songs sound alike.. a bit too alike ; Not that they are slow or sumthin ;} Songs are too similar but they're still great to listen to and hold their replay value :} I should play "Armageddon Bound" again

Of course their songs may seem 'alike' cause they play death metal, and not something progressive for example. Everyone who's interested in Death Metal with lyrics like warfares, should check the band out. Killer riffs & vocals. Jo Bench was my inspiration, my role model, the one of the few women from the extreme scene. I started playing bass because I was amazed of her...

Ah, glad to hear Jo inspired you to play bass! I read she was inspired by Lynda Simpson from Sacrilege, a UK thrahs band.

And on another note, yes, most of their songs look alike.. but they are still awesome.

I would recommend "Those Once Loyal" or "For Victory" as a starting point. The band's sound doesn't really change over time, but it does get refined and honed. I think those would be the two best places to start.
