Album of the 2020s so far.

That is to say, it's the only album of the 2020s that I listened to and is also released. So just by virtue of it being released on the 1st of January of this "decade" (you know what I'm talking about) it gets a review, because if it was to be judged by its cover art alone, I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole.

Nomen Nescio seems to find Tod Huetet Uebel dead on arrival, as the band seems to have broken up previous to the album's release, with only one admittedly great album and two EPs under their belt, so this is pretty much a swansong for a band who barely scratched the surface of the potential that they had. Even this album is just a bit over 30 minutes in runtime so it really feels like it passes by really quick, like the band could've done so much more, but for what it is worth in its short runtime and lifespan, Nomen Nescio works both as a decent opener of a new decade of metal, an eulogy for a decade of Deathspell Omega inspired decade of black metal, as well as reason enough to wish there was more to come from Tod Huetet Uebel.

This Portuguese duo go pretty hand in hand with most of the dissonant black metal of the 2010s, owing a huge deal to the aforementioned Frenchmen, but bringing just enough of a personal touch to the atmospheres and vocal deliveries (mostly the latter), and honing the craft of dissonance and blast beats just enough that it can get away with a sound that was way more original when Tod Huetet Uebel released their previous album, in 2015. But it sounds good, there are great performances on both guitars and vocals, the bass is clearly audible and the drums don't feel too neglected either. At this point and at its length, it's nothing too out of the ordinary, but I'm glad I didn't let the cover art and the lack of familiarity with the band's previous album stop me from checking this out.

I don't think it will take too long for another album to take its place, but for the little time that it lasts, this is the best album of the decade. Let it get its 10 minutes in the spotlight.
