Health insurance in the US functions differently than in Europe. In Europe, the state takes a fee from your wage for medical insurance through the employee. In the US, it is usually the individual who has to sign up for medical insurance and pay a fee.

Personally, the US medical insurance system is better. I get to pay how much I want for what services I need which proves to be cheaper. Back in Europe, I was paying like 20% of my wage into the public medical insurance however the hospital conditions and treatment were atrocious. Almost always I had to resort to going into private healthcare where I had to pay separately. There is no legal possibility to stop paying automatically for public medical insurance and switch to a private medical insurance in Europe. This is what makes the healthcare system in the US better. I found myself paying 10% of my wage for a private medical insurance compared to the public one. And with infinitely better conditions and waiting times. And I could include members of my family too. My mother had to get a prothesis for her knee and the waiting time in the public healthcare system was 2 years to 2 years and a half. With my private insurance I scheduled her surgery in 3 weeks. A bit more expensive, but when you consider the timeframe... it is worth it.

The guy admitted that he never paid medical insurance. Even in Europe, someone who is uninsured has to pay medical expenses. So the system functions the same, what differs is the method through which medical insurance is paid. So nah, socialism remains bad. Just look at where Europe is in general with medical R&D compared to the US or UK. The US healthcare and insurance is not perfect. Far from it. Also, why doesn't this guy go for Obamacare? Didn't US socialists say how great this system is? Even they never access it as it is atrocious, especially for more complex medical issues. For basic shit like treating a flu or a broken leg it might do, but for anything else it is shit. And expensive as fuck for the taxpayer.

In regards to Sweden, it has the same endemic problem most medical systems in Europe suffer from. Insane waiting times. Most of my Swedish acquaintances prefer to fly to private hospitals in fucking Russia, in St. Petersburg for medical ailments that need more urgent treatment. For a country that taxes labor so draconically as Sweden but also other Scandinavian countries, you would expect something better. Not to mention the medical tourism going on in Eastern Europe. A lot middle class citizens in West Europe go to East Europe for even basic medical needs, especially dental care.

If you leave it up to the people, then there's a risk many will ignore paying insurance and fall into such problems. The European system is way better from this perspective.
