So let's go back to the beginning shall we, there were alot of all time classic heavy metal bands emerging in 1980, with some of my favourite albums, here's my ranking for 1980:

1. Black Sabbath - Heaven And Hell
2. Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden
3. AC/DC - Back In Black
4. Motörhead - Ace Of Spades
5. Rush - Permanent Waves
6. Ozzy Osbourne - Blizzard Of Ozz
7. Diamond Head - Lightning To The Nations
8. Angel Witch - Angel Witch
9. Judas Priest - British Steel

I approve your addiction, it is not a bad thing in this case. Also kind of drives me doing these lists these days. I like to do things properly once having started them.

So, yes in 1980 metal was still sort of in its infancy. There were already some great releases but not that many yet.

I am currently familiarizing myself with music from the early 80's, which means I haven't heard too many albums from then. I'll just go ahead and do an all music genres ranking:

1. Chakra - Chakra (jpop)
2. Angel Witch - Angel Witch
3. Гунеш - Гунеш (jazz fusion)
4. Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell
5. Yes - Drama (prog rock)
6. Sun Ra - Strange Celestial Road (avantgarde jazz)
7. Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden
8. Eskaton - Ardeur (zeuhl)
9. Rush - Permanent Waves

I've also heard Motörhead - Ace of Spades, Saxon - Wheels of Steel and Judas Priest - British Steel but didn't like them very much.

Yes it is addictive, I've discovered a shit ton of great albums I hadn't heard before doing this and learned a lot about how the genre evolved.
