I have four favorite Darkthrone albums. And it is their first four, absoutley amazing albums they are. Although I have not listened to their later albums im guessing its the same old Darkthrone?

There was PLENTY of reason for them to change it up. They changed as a rebellion against the newer breed of 'black metal' bands that merely ape the old. They harkened back to the genre's punk roots* while remaining within their own idiom.

Is it really a "rebellion", though? I accept the fact that some of the traditional Black Metal stuff does have a punk and rockin' edge to it - I've been saying for years that Black Metal has things in common with punk. But Darkthrone were known for their dark atmosphere rather than simply a 'fuck you doood your metal's lame and weak innit huhuh beavis' attitude. It seems rather suspicious to me that Darkthrone (and Satyricon) have suddenly adopted the "black n roll" approach, going out of their way to say "well THIS is true Black Metal, if you don't like it you don't understand..." knowing full well that their new approach is rather more commercial and accessible in the current musical climate. Also, as I've said before, Darkthrone said they'd never release a single or make a video - now they've done both, at exactly the same time as they changed their style.

That might all sound rather negative... I mean, I still like Darkthrone. I just think it's important to keep some perspective.

I love Darkthrone alot. Their new album wasn't the greatest in my opinion though. But their first three releases are the best. Soulside Journey is my favorite album by Darkthrone. Despite that it's death metal, and not black metal it's still a really great album in my opinion.

Took me a while to respond.

In regards to their new approach, is it really more commercial? I am not sure of the UK Charts, and, apparently BM DOES show up at the Norwegian Grammys, but in the US, they won't move more than 10,000 units. (Satyricon's Volcano moved 7,500, I believe, in North America). I guess one's perspective on 'commercial' might be largely dependent upon their postal code.

If anything, I think it's a furhter step away from commercialism, in a round about way. They will never get regular play (at least not on this side of the pond) and they just raised a middle finger to piss off the stagnant BM scenesters.

The album might and single are probably not likely to bring them too many new fans, but might piss off a chunk of their old "fans" (you know the ones - those who don't like and bash everything they've released since Zephyrous left).

As for the "we'll never release a single" bit- as I stated before, opinions change. I don't view the single as the end of the world because they wen't back on their word - instead, their change in stance enabled me to enjoy a cover of a Siouxsie and the Banshees song I probably never would have heard otherwise.

I'm a fan of the 'black and roll' stuff that Satyricon and Carpathian Forest do. I'll probably perfer the straightforward traditional BM to this 'sub genre' (can we call it that?) but that doesn't reduce the enjoyment.

I was actually listening to the new Darkthrone release for ages sometime last week. They lyrics really do make me laugh.

was watching an interview with Darkthrone in a BM Documentary (part 1 is here http://youtube.com/watch?v=eYgWgAQJF3g) when Fenriz offered this gem,

"If we are Hank Williams, modern black metal is Garth Brooks."

Fenriz is hilarious.

I agree totally. Darkthrone existed simply to express themselves in a non-mainstream way, and now that the so-called kvlt BM is getting mainstream, they decided to move away from that area, stay true to themselves, and release exactly what they wanted to, not what their label or fans wanted them to.

Shut Up, Shut Up
I'll stick to my guns while you stick to yours
Sit Down
Let's not pretend that I'll have to use force
Are you Satan?
I don't think so
You Copy my style
And you call yourself a man.

You want a piece of me?
Yeah... you do
Begging for this and asking for that
Shut Up, Fucking Twat

Shut Up Fucking Twat

Shut Up Shut Up
I'll stick to my guns
Now you stick to yours
Sit Down
Let's not pretend
That I'll have to use force
Are you satan?
I don't think so
You copy my style
And call yourself a man

Never could fathom my hate
Unable to take a hint
You haven't got a clue
Satanism is lost on you.

A funny thing in swedish stores atleast around where I live, is that in the "popular music shops" you can find all the mainstream music (ofc..) and when you go to the metal section you se = Slipknot , metallica , megadeth , darkthrone...

I aint kiddin. Darkthrone is in every god damn shop around here ^^ its rather funny since I always thought Darkthrone was atleast trying to be underground ^^

Yes, I would even say inside Metal in general but there is a way of expressing that feeling in a more intelligent way, such as mentioning reasons of why they believe they are better and so forth. The way they express themselves is very similar to that in Rap, when they claim superiority without trying to explain well the reason why, more like looking for confrontation and to challenge.

If that is the case we can only see it as a possibility. I remember something though, in this documentary I saw Nocturno saying that old bands make "bread" referring to the old raw Black Metal and that he understood that some may get tired of that and decide to make "cake" (referring to bands adding synth to Black Metal) and that they could get tired of cake too. So I get that sense of humor you talk about. Now, he seemed to not mind other bands playing style so I don't know.

Darkthrone is a band I never really enjoyed. Sure, a song here, a song there, but I still fail to see the all the greatness in their music. They bore me quite. The BM I listen to has developed into the opposite direction. I mean, I still enjoy some Gorgoroth, Burzum and Immortal, but neither Darkthrone, nor Mayhem were ever able to receive my full attention.

I'd like someone to explain why Darkthrone is so great in their opinion. To be honest, I haven't really given "Soulside Journey" a chance yet, is it so different to their other, early works?
