"Kadavreski" is the last album of a really good band that comes from France, Anthemon. If they were first, a band that used to play some Gothic/Doom Metal with a female singer, they did a radical turnover with their last album "Dystopia" and play nowadays something that we can classify in the Atmospheric Progressive style. "Kadavreski" their last album is a real original piece of music and I'm sure that a lot of people will enjoy this release.
But first, do you know what is a "Cadavre Exquis" (Exquisite Corpse)? Well actually this is a game invented in 1925 by the surrealists. The system is simple, take some people and ask them to collaborate on a drawing, a text, on the same work. The first one will write a word, the second one will add a new element without even knowing what the previous have done and etc. At the end you will find a nice and funny (or messy), result. This is the principle of the "Cadavre Exquis" and actually I'm sure that a lot of you already did that as a game. So now, after this little explanation, I'm sure that you understand the meaning of the title of the new album, the guys used the same system to write the first song of the album, ("Kadavreski") and if it's a really good and ambitious idea it's also, obviously, a really tricky one.
"Kadavreski" (the song) is long, count 23 minutes, and interesting on a side because the result is not bad at all. So ok, I have to admit that it is a bit messy sometime and not really well structured but it was the risk to do something like that so even if the song is not so catchy, believe me that it is something disturbing and I will never blame a band which has the "balls" to do something like that. The music itself is like a mix between Doom, Atmospheric/Gothic music and Progressive metal, the vocals are clean in general (we still have Death ones but not a lot) and the rhythm is slow in general. There are a lot of melodies produced by the guitars and also a lot of Keyboards (they're the one who produce the general ambiance of the CD), this is clearly melodic. Though, the three others songs are really cool too. It's clearly dark Progressive Metal now but it's not really easy of access for someone who doesn't listen to a lot of this kind of music and who can be disturbed by songs that aren't linear at all? But on the other hand it's really interesting and original so?
"Kadavreski" is a good surprising album but the difference with "Dystopia" comes from the fact that "Kadavreski" is a bit more elitist in my opinion. It doesn't mean that it is bad, at the opposite, but not so easy of access for a basic listener. Have a look on this release, this is good (at least for me) and I'm sure that a lot of you will like this CD but remember too that is complex so, be prepared. But all in all, Anthemon proves that they're a great band that can take risks and "Kadavreski" is the confirmation of their great musical potential.
