Dreary, leafless trees, mist, gloomy light, a figure, alone. Remembrance's cover artwork on their latest effort Fall, Obsidian Night says it all, in deep shades of grey and brown, a beautiful first impression to say the least. You guessed correctly, this band from France moves in melodic funeral doom/death metal soundscapes and with their third full-length they appear more balanced in what they want to express, more mature and highly emotional for one more time. It's common secret that almost everything has been said and done in terms of post-90s doom metal scene, yet despite the overall sound diffusion, pure emotion and expression from the heart of the artist straight to the heart of the listener hasn't ceased to be.

The atmosphere is gloomy and even more darkening as the album flows, a heart-felt journey through memories, forlorn dreams and living nightmares. The doleful sound of the guitars devastates any possible glimpse of flickering hope amidst its downtuned, heavy and slow pace, whereas the acoustic chords offer a more nostalgic approach to the sound of the band. The atmosphere becomes mesmerizing and bittersweet when the keyboards start their solitary dance, to become more bereaving and surrounding along with the guitars and the dynamic rhythm section, with the drumming/percussion being quite bombastic, evoking a sense of marche funèbre. The vocal factor relies mainly on Matthieu's deep, unearthly grunts that strengthen the rapture, with some shadows of broken reciting, yet the moments come for Carline to offer her ethereal interpretation, breathing diversity in terms of expression through a floating, fragile serenade.

I don't know why, but I love France, it always has something of immense, mourning beauty to offer in terms of music and Fall, Obsidian Night is definitely one of this little something you cherish alone after dusk. So "fall, obsidian night, fall and devour me."

"One by one, falling, such a leitmotiv of final end."

Good album. I agree with the rating though slightly a bit lower. like a 7.5
Don't let the funeral doom tag throw people off, this is a very well put together album that contains a rather easy listen for the genre, compared to other acts within Funeral Doom.

I still haven't heard it. But will be getting a copy from the guy who made the cover art some time soon.

Haven't heard it yet either. Hopefully it won't let me down as much as Silencing The Moments, which was a huge step down from their brilliant debut.

I agree with you on that one.
Btw, I should have the album by the time Dutch Doom Days comes by.
