If you are at all familiar with the band DoomSword you might expect another bludgeoning assault of epic doom in their latest effort The Eternal Battle. Not to worry, a bludgeoning you shall receive but just as was hinted at on the previous album My Name Will Live On the pace has quickened significantly from the ominous battle-march of albums such as Let Battle Commence to a full speed charge of traditionally inspired heavy metal.

The shift away from the epic doom of previous albums has given way to Berlaffa's rapid delivery of guitarwork which still oozes that doom tinged charm but is played with a clearly different intent. Tracks such as "The Fulminant" are a good example; a much faster pace leaves behind their epic doom roots yet still retains an identifiable sound best felt in Deathmaster's vocals.

The ability the band shows here in that they can craft an album which is markedly different from previous efforts yet still manage to hold convincingly onto a sound that is all their own is truly remarkable. Even steering more towards the heavy side of their heavy/doom sound fails to leave the band short of ideas, the songwriting on this album more than meets expectations with each track offering a distinct battle-hardened character.

As the album title would imply an atmosphere of glory on the field of battle, as always, is DoomSword's goal. It would seem no matter which terrain they happen to wage war upon they always emerge triumphant, self-confident and uncompromising and we are left to reap the spoils.
