Pillar Of Detest is the latest Luciferian lunar lullabies from the French black metal outfit Moonreich.
On the (lunar) surface, all is great and grand with this album. Everything sounds jut swell as the band riff, blast, pound, and gargle away in black metal fury. The band constantly shift between riffs, so the sonic landscape is ever-changing, ever-twisting, turning and winding. Frenzied and blasting here, mid-paced mood setters there, like ridges and craters on the lunar landscape.
The sound is great and everything is well balanced, which makes this, well, in black metal terms, fairly accessible.
Despite the excellent execution, obvious skill, and great sound, the album somehow never resonated with me.
While nihilistic, misanthropic, vile, full of snails and puppy dogs tails, and all things black metal, it failed to pull me in like the latest from fellow Frenchies/label mates Regarde Les Hommes Tomber, nor was it as out there madcap as some of their other acts. It had lots of elements I like and enjoy in music, but just never managed to grab me by the scruff of my neck and bounce me off the walls.
Granted, if my words seem underwhelming, that is merely my personal experience with the album. As I have noted, Pillars Of Detest is well executed and has a lot that fans of the genre will undoubtedly enjoy. So as always, don't take my words as gospel or anything. Check it out and decide for yourselves. Start with "Freikorps".
