To start with, Butchered At Birth is one of the most essential death metal albums of the early 90s, because back then the idea of death metal had not yet been fully formed as to what it should be.

Of course, pioneers in the genre like Death, Morbid Angel and others have built a solid image of this music in people's minds, but what Cannibal Corpse do is unique. Many bands have tried to replicate this raw aggression since then, but I don't think anyone has managed to achieve the same effect.

We owe a lot to Barnes' genius; even though he's not at his best vocally in the 90s, he was a beast, especially on Butchered At Birth. His talent for painting terrifying pictures in the listener's mind is impressive. Some might say that the production ruins much of the feeling, which is true, as there is still much to be desired from this; however, in my opinion, precisely because it is so compressed, it gives a primitive rawness.

Something can also be said about the cover; yes, this is one of the most brutal pictures, directly drawing you right from the start into the feeling you will experience while listening to th album.

Going forward, however, Barnes' voice has never reached such lows and I think then he used a lot of potential from his voice to sound like a literal demon, we have never heard such vocal cord droning again, which is a shame. I think he used up a lot of his vocal potential here, and lost some of his power going forward.

This was my review of Butchered At Birth. I think I covered most of the essential elements and qualities of the album as a whole.

I understand that "Butchered at Birth" was a very early release of the band and that at the time it was somewhat new and inventive (EBTL was already released, hence the "somewhat"), so I'll try to be as lenient as possible towards this album. But I may as well put it out in open now, I do not like it.
