Hear the battle cry of The Besieger, the master of the art of war!

I first discovered Voidhammer (a one-man project from Houston, Texas) through Metal Storm's Clandestine Cuts series when their eponymous debut EP was unleashed in 2022. I was immediately interested by their combination of heaviness and groove, and thus anxiously awaited the release of their full-length debut, titled The Besieger.

Self-described as “blackened battle stoner doom”, the style of Voidhammer demonstrates clear influences from High On Fire and Conan, with additional touches that remind of bands like Asphyx, Bolt Thrower, and Electric Wizard. If you're a fan of catchy heaviness like me, that combination of influences sounds like Voidhammer have hit the jackpot. And, indeed, I can't complain!

With a slow yet unrelenting pace, the doom rhythm grinds forward like a tank, steamrolling everything in its path. The powerful vocals lead the charge, and the strong drum beats make you want to march ahead, towards cosmic battle. The devastating onslaught is only occasionally interrupted, giving way to an unnerving bass lick or a melodic guitar solo. And, atop the supermassive foundation, Voidhammer’s soundscape is energized by incredibly groovy lead guitar riffs.

The style is consistently great throughout the album, whether on the purely instrumental tracks (“Herald of Triumph” and “Mortuary Cult”), the powerful title track, or the epic conclusion “The Siege of the Grimfrost Keep”. Ultimately, for me, the best track of the album is the monumental, 10-minute “Warpgate Sentinel”. Starting in a dreamlike, stoner haze, the tension gradually builds, before being unleashed by an insanely catchy main motif, accentuated by a screeching lead guitar riff. Rounded out by entrancing melodies and an atmospheric outro, “Warpgate Sentinel” is a serious contender for my favorite song of the year.

In conclusion, The Besieger is a very, very impressive debut for this one-man project, showcasing catchy rhythm, melodic atmosphere, destructive vocals, and finest doom guitar-work. If you want headbang-inducing fun amid crushingly heavy battle hymns, it's time you've felt the mighty strike of the Voidhammer!

The sign of good music is the ability to both convey and trigger emotion.

“ In conclusion, The Besieger is a very, very impressive debut for this one-man project” , exactly! I couldn’t believe this is a one man band without 20 years of experience in their back.

It’s not the best album of the year, but this band is going places!

Big High On Fire vibes to this, but with that Conan doom edge as you say. I like the album a decent amount - I just get slightly blue-balled by the vocals. When they first came in, I thought this would be like an effect used to make the first lines eerie before they fully unleashed, but after realizing that was the vocal style throughout, it just sounded too much like a muffled constipated Matt Pike and dampened the impact just a tad. That said, vocals are usually the area that suffers in a one-man band, and they're not that distracting. Some solid sludge doom riffs that manage to keep the 9/10-min songs enjoyable mostly throughout - definite potential for this act!

I don't mind the vocals so much, although they are definitely the not-so-strong link here. Still, the riffs are super cool, the High On Fire influence is there, but the songwriting overcomes any sense of plagiarism. It's inspiring what just one person can do. Upon first listen, the title track and the closer were my favourite ones, along with “Warpgate Sentinel”, of course.

Bergfried and Voidhammer were both featured on that Clandestine Cuts issue, and here they are now with their impressive full-length debuts coming out within weeks from each other!

It's certainly an impressive full-length debut for a one-man project this, but I think there's always room for improvement during the early stages of a band's career like this though. I can see why the vocals might be a bit of a hindrance for some as they're perhaps the weakest element, but I can definitely see this project going far on the doom/sludge scene, especially with tasty riffs like this.
