Another power metal band from Spain! I don't know if I'm the only one to think that the growing metal scene in that country focussed mostly on power metal, sometimes cheesy but also heavy. That's the case with Phantom Mask, with additional keyboards used to render a more symphonic overall sounding.
I should also mention that their lyrics are in English and that there's one thing that they are the only one to offer, but can't be reviewed: The female singer also performs oriental dances on stage, though there's nothing including an oriental touch on this 3rd demo (the band released the first two when they were previously known as "Deliverence").
The listening begins with a 7 minute opener, which is actually the longest and probably the best track of the CD. It's the more varied and the most symphonic song, although this aspect is a bit weak cause of the keyboards that sound like... well, keyboards: It lacks the majesty that this kind of song needs. That feeling also applies to vocals, both lead and backing voices. It's not bad but could be a lot better. However, let's not forget we're only talking about a demo, so the production and sound aren't likely to be perfect.
The other 4 songs are all close to 5:30, and none of them really stands out. I would dare to say that I prefer Cavallier, but the reason behind this preference is that the first half really reminds me of what is good in Tierra Santa's music. On the other hand, the track I like the least would be Metal Universe, so predictable.
Let's be honest, Phantom Mask will have to come up with new ideas if they want to stand a chance. If cheesy lyrics are exactly your cup of tea, you're likely to love the music offered by Phantom Mask but if you're expecting more, you won't find it here. Hopefully, I think those guys do have the required skills to make something better in the future.
