Pyro is not a newcomer, the band even has started its career in 1992 (you can find on Metal Storm the review of the re-edition of their first album "Velvet Glove"). Back in time they used to play Hard FM, it wasn't bad at all, not revolutionary though and probably a bit trendy too but it was really correct and the level of the Pyro brothers was really honorable. Fifteen years later, the band is still alive and has released a nice album "Stab In The Back" at the beginning of the year. Today we will just talk about a new re-edition, the re-edition of their 3rd album released in 2004 "Breaking The Point".
The big difference between the first and the last album of Pyro and "Breaking Point" is that this one is probably their darker album. "Breaking Point" is a really melancholic album of Hard Rock and to sum up, "Breaking Point" is composed of mid-tempo and Hard rock ballads, mixed with Australian Hard Rock a la Rose Tattoo. It's pleasant even if I have to say that a full length album composed of such kind of songs can lack a bit of energy in the end (after all that's Hard Rock and not Doom). All in all, if you like soft Southern rock and ballads, "Breaking Point" is a nice release, but not a masterpiece though. It's ok, it's good Hard Rock but it's also really classic without anything new.
The line-up of Pyro isn't the most solid one of the scene. The band has changed a lot since 1992 and it was Jay Burnett who was the singer on this release (this is not him anymore?). His hot nice voice was perfect for the music of the combo (but only for the songs of this album probably?) and it was a good idea to hire a British singer (at least no problem with a strong French accent?). Even if the production of this album wasn't one more time so perfect, the sound of "Breaking Point" was ok but unfortunately the cover of this re-edition (like the one of "Velvet Glove") is not good at all and clearly looks too amateurish. Too bad that Thundering didn't find the way to produce something better (money?).
"Breaking Point" is an album for the fans of the band but also for all the ones who like melancholic music. Don't except anything new here that's right but at least we're in front of a nice album. Be sure that you'll have a look on it if you want to listen to nice melancholic Hard Rock.
