Opeth - Sweden. Do I really need to explain why they made this list? |
2.
Led Zeppelin - England. Many folk will say anything after "Physical Graffiti" is crap but is it? No. Problem was Zep set the standard so damn high it would have been impossible to replicate or top it. John Bonham's increased alcohol abuse and Jimmy Page's heroin habit didn't help either. |
3.
Emperor - Norway. This band released such consistent music they decided to disband to finish on a high. Little man typing this believes it was still too soon. |
4.
Aria - Russia. The Soviets' Iron Maiden, who unlike their counterparts managed to release albums in the 90's that didn't get critically beaten to a pulp. |
5.
Moonsorrow - Finland. Very dense music with 15 - 30 minute song lengths. A recipe for failure. But not for Moonsorrow. Incredible for a band who started releasing their 'heathen metal' music in their late teens. |
6.
Katatonia - Sweden. Not just the most underrated metal band out of Sweden but probably the most underrated metal band period. Despite being plagued with lineup changes and a change in vocal style for frontman Jonas Renkse they have managed to retain an album consistency every band worth their salt could ever dream of. |

Disturbed - U.S.A. Okay purists will dismiss this because they are 'too commercial' but look past that. There is good reason all their albums reach the top of the billboard chart. It's possible to make good music and have commercial success you know! |
8.
System Of A Down - U.S.A. Proof that not all nu metal sucked (or alternative metal for those who hate the term nu metal). The blend of middle eastern rhythms, avant-garde and thrash metal sounds impossible but S.O.A.D executed it with unmatched success. |
9.
Cruachan - Ireland. Celtic Music mixed with Metal? Yes please. Proof that Ireland isn't just U2, Corrs, Cranberries and Sinead O'Conner. |
10.
Amon Amarth - Sweden. I can read the abuse in the comments already. You can argue some albums are weaker than others but name one album that is completely unlistenable. That's right, you can't. And if you do you are clutching at straws or you've mistaken them for the Swedish House Mafia. |
11.
Queens Of The Stone Age - U.S.A. Another great example of a band who deservedly receive critical and commercial acclaim. They might be called 'stoner rock' or 'stoner metal' but I am proof that every album from QOTSA can be enjoyed stone cold sober. |
12.
Devil Doll - Slovenia. Avant-Garde Metal in its true sense. Usually those first 2 words are more of a turn off than {insert trashy celebrity here} but Mr Doctor and co carved 5 albums of remarkable bliss. I wish they made more music. Only been waiting 20 years and counting. |
13.
Dungeon - Australia. Underrated power metal band. After 13 years of touring and demo recordings they released their proper debut in 2002 followed by one album per year to make up for lost time until they disbanded in 2005. Or did they? |
14.
Lord - Australia. Of course not! They renamed themselves straight after in order to expand their sound without upsetting their long time fans. It worked so well that older fans like me stuck with them and gave them equal praise for their post-rebirth output. |
15.
Faith No More - U.S.A. No other band could make albums that sound completely different from one another yet are instantaneously recognised as the same band. Such is their genius. |
16.
Killing Joke - England. They are a f***in' good band. Enough said. |
17.
Orphaned Land - Israel. They were nominated for the noble peace prize or so the rumour went. True or not, they deserve it. They don't release albums frequently making it hard to produce anything sub-par. Small quantity of high quality. |
18.
Overkill - U.S.A. Most overlooked thrash band. 18 albums in and not one of them sucked. Their 90's output may have been a little weaker but remember the state of Thrash during that time and you'll appreciate their quality a lot more. |
19.
Arkona - Russia. Folk Metal may come off as a bit of a novelty for some but any band that can continuously take it into the darkest of corners without the need for theatrical gimmicks deserves a place on lists like this. |
20.
Týr - Faroe Islands. I prefer to recognise the tiny islands in the Kingdom of Denmark for this band rather than their love of whaling. |
