Space Metal!

***Currently working through suggestions and adding some spacey non-metal things when they cross my mind***
As a lover of all things sci-fi I find metal to be the most accommodating of genres when it comes to themes of space/aliens. This is a list of those albums which use this theme and/or evoke an overall 'spacey' atmosphere and which I find particularly intriguing and enjoyable. No order for now and a work in progress (recommendations most welcome) Last Updated: 9th April 2014

1.Atoma - Skylight
2.Ayreon - The Universal Migrator Part I: The Dream Sequencer
3.Dol Ammad - Star Tales
4.Star One - Space Metal
5.Pagan's Mind - Enigmatic : Calling

Most Talented Vocalists In Metal

My other lists:
Tasty Stuff Not Currently Featured On MS
So I Heard You Like Opeth...

A concise list of my metalhead man-crushes (now featuring ladies.)

While there is little introduction required for some of these bands and their front(wo)men, there are no words that can accurately describe such jaw-dropping talent anyhow. The albums and youtube links listed are meant to display the full capacity of vocalists' talents, not the bands' most quality or popular tracks - click the links below and behold the prowess.

1.Abstrakt Algebra - Abstrakt Algebra
2.Adagio - Underworld
3.Akercocke - Words That Go Unspoken, Deeds That Go Undone
4.Amorphis - Silent Waters
5.Anaal Nathrakh - Vanitas

Crushing (Not For The Faint Of Heart)

A little list of albums that have been kicking my ass as of late. Some albums on this list may appear to be "odd" choices, but "crushing" in this context does not necessarily mean heavy. It could be referring to the emotional intensity of the release or the literal heavy pounding sound. Hope you enjoy.

Note (1): More to be added as I see fit.
Note (2): These albums are in no specific order, I have just been adding them as I see fit.

1.Esoteric - The Pernicious Enigma
2.Ahab - The Divinity Of Oceans
3.Agalloch - The Mantle
4.Warning - Watching From A Distance
5.Ulcerate - The Destroyers Of All

A Brutal Poem Of Technicalities (Ordered By Years)

So here are some Brutal, Technical, Progressive and sometimes Atmospheric death metal works I enjoy or that I believe should be given a try because they're unique and interesting, almost an essentials list when it comes to that style. There are some unorthodox choices as well in the mix that aren't just full-on tech death, some bands also incorporate grind, black, core elements or even jazz. Hope you'll all find something that suits your taste! The list is ordered by years. Feel free to comment and give recommendations! Just refrain from telling me an album shouldn't be featured here... All the albums here are deliberately hand-picked and if it made the list, it's for a reason.

Personal absolute favorites of mine have a ★ beside the genre. And my pics of best album for each year are identified by (best of xxxx) beside the albums.

🇨🇦 = From Canada, My Country! We're quite good at Technical and Brutal Death Metal... Trust me. I mean, you'll see for yourself.

2000-2014: A 'Factored' Top 100

Take a look at the Top Album lists of recent years and you'll notice an obvious trend. In 2005 the average rating of the top 25 albums is 8.76. Jump to 2014 and the average among the top 25 has dropped to 8.26. An almost linear decrease is observable for the 10 years in between.

I was curious to see what a Top 100 for 2000-2014 would look like if I factored the votes to account for the 'rating decline'. I hope you find it interesting.

1.Agalloch - The Mantle
2.Opeth - Blackwater Park
3.Blindead - Affliction XXIX II MXMVI
4.Aquilus - Griseus
5.Nevermore - Dead Heart In A Dead World

MZ's Favorite Death Metal Albums

My favarite death metal records. I avoided making this list for long because
a) I've suggested many of these albums on the lists of the others
b) many of them appear on my other lists
c) my knowledge on OSDM is extremely shallow
In the other words, this is a shit list and I admit it. Any help for improvement in the form of suggestions is appreciated.

1.!T.O.O.H.! - Pod Vládou Biče (Under The Reign Of The Whip)
2.Abyssal - Novit Enim Dominus Qui Sunt Eius
3.Adversarial - Death, Endless Nothing And The Black Knife Of Nihilism
4.Altars - Paramnesia
5.Antediluvian - λόγος

Epic Album Closers

Some albums are really good. Many of these are good all the way around. And, in many cases, there is a single song that stands out, sometimes it's the last song on the album. This is a list of those songs.

For a more in depth look at this, I've codified each into a given category:
Type 1 - 'The long song at the end.' Often the title track. These have a tendency to be most well written and dynamic pieces on the album.

1.!T.O.O.H.! - Order And Punishment (Řád A Trest)
2.Abigail Williams - Becoming
3.Agalloch - The Mantle
4.Amon Amarth - Versus The World
5.Anekdoten - Vemod

2.System Of A Down - Toxicity
3.Warning - Watching From A Distance
4.Edge Of Sanity - Crimson II
5.Converge - Jane Doe

You Wouldn't Know What Good Art Is If It Hit You In The Face

Since we had the whole MS album art awards, I figured I would try and list out my favourites.
This is not in any order and has no relation to the music, there are bands in here that I don't like, but the artwork is still great.
I'm not quite sure of some of the illustrators and designers on some covers, so they have been left blank, if you do know who did them, let me know. If you think there are some artists that I would dig coz of similar work, just leave me a shout.
This list is not finished so I will keep adding covers that I like.
I don't like Derek Riggs work too much so don't ask me why an Iron Maiden cover is not on the list.

1.Baroness - Red Album
2.Baroness - Blue Record
3.Mastodon - Leviathan
4.Agoraphobic Nosebleed - Agorapocalypse
5.Kvelertak - Kvelertak

My Favourites And Why I Like Them

I always admired people who do really cool lists. But since I don't know anything, I can't really make a good one. So here's the babby-boy of lists, just to get my juices flowing.

1.Neurosis - Souls At Zero
2.A Forest Of Stars - Grave Mounds And Grave Mistakes
3.Neurosis - Times Of Grace
4.Terra Tenebrosa - The Tunnels
5.Amigo The Devil - Everything Is Fine

Current Top 100, 5 Years On

Back when I joined the site in 2011, I did a customary top 100 album list. Every year since then, when I've looked back at it it's become increasingly unrecognisable from my own tastes. Seeing bands I once listened to daily vanish from my playlists, new bands emerge as favourites, and bands even come and go in my reckonings during that time period (Iced Earth, Alcest, even Pain Of Salvation and more certainly peaked in my listening habits around 2011-12 to slowly vanish into obscurity). Now that it's just gone 5 years since I did that list, I thought I might do an updated list just to see how much my tastes have shifted. Whilst compiling the list, I pretty much worked on gut instinct, which was weird as I found myself almost disregarding albums I know I like whilst promoting albums I'm honestly undecided on - it almost seemed to veer away from album quality at times to embracing a subconscious effect the albums have had. Anyway, here it is, plus some honorable mentions that I was surprised missed out.

1.Dream Theater - Images And Words
2.Sylosis - Monolith
3.Sylosis - Edge Of The Earth
4.Agalloch - The Mantle
5.Protest The Hero - Kezia
