I have scrapped and then returned to this review so many times - the more and more I listen to this album, the more I hear Testament copying themselves and other bands, so this time I'll spare the details and save a few hundred words.

The bulk of what we have here is groove-based thrash; tracks 4 and 7 are the most straight-out speedsters but even then it's only for half the song. The beginnings of tracks 1 3 and 6 are passable Malmsteen-like sections that completely disrupt the thrashmosphere and don't even have much to do with the songs they introduce. On top of that, the band does something similar for the entirety of tracks 5 and 10. What in the name of Zoldon were they thinking? "Let's rip off Ride the Lightning again and end with an evil instrumental!" Nice try, but you FORGOT the EVIL! Bands, producers, and anyone else with influence needs to know that four minutes of depressed guitar noodling is not how you close a thrash album. Bad Testament, bad!

Released by the end of the '80s in 1988, when other thrash metal bands' directions began to divert from basic Bay Area Thrashing to different, broader styles (Metallica's change to a more mainstream and arguably progressive style by ...And Justice for All and Slayer's South of Heaven which featured slower music), Testament come with their second studio album still formed of mostly pure thrash metal, with a few groovy tunes here and there. The album is, like any other thrash metal album, full of riffs, catchy songs, speed and interesting lyrical topics.

This is a pretty good album on its own merits, but it suffers from being overshadowed by their epic debut album. With all the stuff coming out in this period it faded quickly for me - when I wanted to listen to Testament in later years I always grabbed The Legacy.

I think this album fails in the same fashion Megadeth's Youthanasia "failed" - lots of the songs sound pretty much the same, and as a whole this album can sometimes be plainly boring. However, if you listen to just one individual track at a time, you can't really find too much bad things to rant about.

I probably prefer their debut album to this, but 'the new order' still beats every other thrash metal album released i the late 80's in my opinion.

Not quite the quality of The Legacy, although the solos are better than on the debut.

The Aerosmith cover is awful, and this album is way overrated, especially compared to the impeccable debut.

Good album, not as good as their previous release but still a very good album.

This album has very good guitar solos.

Slower and more melodic than their first album. I especially liked the instrumental section in the middle (Hypnosis and the beginning of Disciples of the Watch). Great solos as always and the vocals are an interesting mix of Mustaine's and Hetfield's

When you listen Overkill you need to listen Testament. Good 80's work another band what from that time I prefer more as other bay area thrash acts. Good heavy one, maybe not best albums if we judge from MTV videos, but its decent one. Just simply youth and vision to thrash, rest came naturally. Intro was good and decent interesting way to start.

When you listen Overkill you need to listen Testament.

Overkill, Testament and Exodus are generally considered the best of the rest of the US thrash bands.

Almost but never quite as good as the best releases from Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer. Most would include Anthrax in that as well but I was never their biggest fan.

I was never a fan of Anthrax either, I never considered them part of my personal big 4, I always thought Testament were far more superior and should of been up there with Megadeth, Slayer and Metallica, I would even put Anthrax just behind Exodus and Overkill.

I could never quite put my finger on it at the time. I guess looking back, I found them a bit cartoonish. Talented singer though he undoubtedly is, I wasn't really a huge fan of Belladonna's vocals either.

They do sound cartoonist, and a little bit punk Imo, not that it was a bad thing, it's just different to my usual taste, and other Thrash bands around.

I never considered them part of the big 4

I think that name had more to do with album sales than quality.

I never dug my self in old days to Exodus. Metallica was best, then Overkill equally as Testament , then other bands as Slayer, Megadeth, and other bay area.

It took me a long time to appreciate Exodus as well actually. They always sounded a little rough around the edges. (For me) back when I was 15/16 it was:

1. Metallica
2. Slayer
3. Megadeth/Testament/Overkill + Suicidal Tendencies
4. Anthrax/Exodus

But if you include the European bands my favourites would include Celtic Frost and Kreator. Morbid Tales is in my top 5 favourite albums of all time.

Agreed. Much stronger than The Legacy (8.6/10). The Aerosmith cover is terrible (as are most covers in Metal), so I'm excluding that from my score.

9.4/10 for me - 'The New Order' and 'Into The Pit' are the standout songs. 'Eerie Inhabitants', 'Trial By Fire', 'Disciples Of The Watch', 'The Preacher' and 'A Day Of Reckoning' are all also great.

Damn I love this album! Yeah. it may become samey, but this is the same type of thrash song I like - melodic, groovy, catchy and filled with excellent riffs and incredible solos. Literally every song is good, no fillers, even instrumental pieces put some atmosphere and gloom.
