The CD was mixed at Sonic Pump Studios in Helsinki, Finland. The mastering took place on April 10 at Finnvox Studios with Mika Jussila and Nino Laurenne.

A video for the song "The Divided Heart" was shot with director Mirco Andreis (Eldritch, Macbeth, Disarmonia Mundi).

"The Open Breach" was recorded during the sessions for Winter Wake.

What's happening to Elvenking? Damn, with their previous release 'The Winter Wake' I was already a bit disappointed in comparison with their two first really good albums but unfortunately, the worst has come now with 'The Scythe'... Things must be said, Elvenking is not a Folk Metal band anymore and only play Power with some few Folk touches... That's sad...

The poppyness of this album can be a lil off putting but once you open your mind a tad its a fucking masterpiece. one of my fave albums of all time.

The band were obviously trying something new here (i.e. the spoken word narrative intros to various songs and the inclusion of harsher vocals), but I still feel that it is overall a considerable weak record when put up against Elvenking's earlier material. In my opinion, the vocal delivery sounds worse here than on "The Winter Wake", and basically proves underwhelming when the instrumental performance is so solid. However, I welcome the aggression on tracks such as the title track and "Poison Tears", though the real standout song for me is "A Riddle of Stars".

Worse than everything before, but quite enjoyable if you like a little electronics or weird ideas in your metal. Some of the tracks are really good, Like the Scythe or Lost Hill of Memories. I have to say the thing that ruins some of the songs for me are the pseudo though-guy grunts, always after singing a melodic line, its a cliche repeated in the album and it blows ass. But overall, if you like your power metal with some touches of folky electronic things, this can be rather nice
