It takes something special to release one album and be noticed on a larger scale. But to follow it up with an equally acclaimed second effort without becoming drab is a plateau hardly reached by a younger band. One of my very favourite Melodic Prog Metal albums... I really never tire of it.
---- First gig was Manowar (loincloths 'n' all), Bristol Colston Hall in March 1983, on the 'Hail to England' tour. Tickets were £3.75, 300 in the audience, Mercyful Fate never showed, but my hearing still got seriously trashed..

I never get bored of this album. Been listening from time to time for years. No filler, great prog, musicianship and songwriting. Fav. song is of course the masterpiece "Mouth Of Madness". The longest song on the album with lots of changes and emotions.

I am a fan of this band but this album is by far my least favourite. There's not a single song I like enough to want to listen to it again, except maybe the closer. There are a couple of sections over the runtime that I enjoy a little, but as a whole I find in plain boring. Even their overall sound is worse than the debut and feels a step backwards evolution-wise. Good thing they corrected this with the phenomenal Nine.

Written by 24emd on 23.01.2024 at 04:49 It's the other way around for a lot of people, at least when the album came out. Nine was considered the inferior (for lack of a better word) release by many , being catchier, more accessible. Oh well...
