Like remembering a dream, the opening minutes of this album serenade us with a haunting cello solo. The sound of a nearby forest stream provides a backdrop for this melody; it's a familiar yet distant setting. Have I been here before? Just as the dream becomes clearer and you reach that part of your memory that hides it, the crushing guitars break open the door and all hope is lost.

Yeah, but I'm sure that all users here have physical copies with the lyrics and have never downloaded anything, ever.

That is why there are thousands of sites like metalstorm where you can check song lyrics

It's amazing. That's no doubt in my mind, but I hope that with their next album they try something with a little more originality (like The Mantle when it came out), this is a sound that can tire out quickly.

A truly magnificent album which takes numerous spins to really appreciate. After many listens this is definitely becoming my favourite Agalloch release from their entire repertoire - that's right, even (slightly) more so than The Mantle! The unique blend of neofolk, atmospheric black, even post-metal sonic spheres is executed exquisitely.

Lets be honest, does it live up to the two before this? does it even live up to the debut? probably not, but those are 3 of the finest albums ever made and just because this doesnt quite match them its still an amazing album. haughms voice in the middle of black lake nidstang is one of the best moments of their entire discography.

Indeed took me a couple of spins to fully appreciate it.
I prefer it to their debut and their latest album.
But it is nowhere as good as their two masterpieces.
Highlights: I like all tracks from 2 to 5, Black lake probably most.

If by whole bands you mean Agalloch, I'm not sure yet.

I remember listening to this album driving down to London to watch them live in 2012 (which was an incredible gig in a tiny venue). Not their strongest release, but still a great listen.

I'm not sure why but 'Black Lake Niðstång' makes me imagine Lake Fjalding in Morrowind. I guess it adds to the atmosphere.

8.6/10 for me - 'Into The Painted Grey' is the standout track IMO. No real weak tracks on this album.

Holy F, previous 2 albums didn't do much for me, too boring for my taste. But 'Into The Painted Grey' alone was worth it to go through discography.

Admittedly this takes a lot more patience to really get into, especially when comparing it to The Mantle abd Ashes Against The Grain, but given time it's actually really solid. "Ghosts Of The Midwinter Fires" is the main highlight for me, "Into The Painted Grey", and "The Watcher's Monolith" I also thought were really good too, "Black Lake Niðstång" isn't bad just a wee bit too long imo.
