I was expecting a return to the roots of the band since 1997 now. "One Second" was a great release but it was also the beginning of a big change in the musical orientation of Paradise Lost. It gave to me some good hopes for their future but also, I must be honest with that point, some fears. And if we got some good things during this long period, my fears was also righ and I'm sorry to say that, we got a lot of deceptions... Lately, the guys promised a return to a heavier music, something more in the spirit of Draconian Time, then evidently I was awaiting a lot their new album, "Paradise Lost". And if it's maybe not a return to the first loves of the band, I can confirm you that I'm not dreaming, definitely they did something... Maybe that we don't have a "Shades Of Got" but at least, we have something which really sound "Metal"? Yummy !!!

I'm actually kind of shocked to read that. Do you just not like Paradise Lost or is it just this album?

Crap, I've only seen this now I quite like the first five (though I prefer Icon and Draconian Times to the first three, I'm not big yet on death doom or whatever the proper order is), but I don't like a lot of the stuff afterwards, especially this one... ya, I know I listen to Suomi metal and all that, but even Charon/Sentenced sound way darker and more serious than this.

As I listened to this album back in 2005 I didn't like it at all. But now, listening to it again after 7 years, I feel that it's not a bad album. Some songs are pretty good too. Surely it can't be compared to Draconian Times but, looking at it now, it was a step in the direction that eventually led Paradise Lost to record Faith Divides Us, Death Unites Us, my favourite record of modern Paradise Lost.

This album calls going beck to roots? This is well lil better how MDB might turn in direction to gothic, this is maybe mot badn album, but still PL must do better,I dont know to judge it from gothic or metal criterias?

Symbol Of Life before this partially returned some anger, metal spirit, heaviness and strong melodies into the band's music. This one here said bye bye to dancefloor stuff, returned Mackintosh's trademark soloing, had more metal structured compositions and strengthened the other rediscovered things I mentioned before.

This is not so bad either

Red shift and Don't Belong were superb tracks but the rest was uninspired and the album became weak with all those fillers.

At first I thought this album was pretty "meh", but years later after listening to it again I actually quite like it (at least the first half or so).

A good couple of the choruses help this album in not getting a lower grade. Same for the solos and leads which are classic Mackintosh style. But overall a bland album. My first PL alum though, which gives it extra nostalgia points.
