Who hasn't heard of Paradise Lost? They are considered as one of the pioneers of the so-called Death-Doom genre (the others being My Dying Bride and Anathema), although they are not unfamiliar in the gothic scene either. Wandering aimlessly in the already-saturated electronic wilderness during the late '90s, they made a welcome yet unsuccessful return to their roots with Paradise Lost in 2005. In Requiem rose from its ashes two years later with devastating effect, and now we are presented with PL's latest, Faith Divides Us, Death Unites Us. Will it live up to the hype, or will it fall flat on its face, dismissing any notion that the once mighty Paradise Lost has indeed been resurrected from its grave?

A very pleasant surprise, a solid album, the music reminds me of Icon, I felt really good listening to this. I think this album is better than all post '95 releases. One of the best 2009 albums for me.

You're probably thinking of bands such as After Forever, epica, Within Temptation etc. which have nothing to do with Gothic Metal whatsoever. They don;'t have any gothic in their sound whereas Paradise Lost has lots of it. Just listen to Sisters Of Mercy and you'll clearly notice.

Yes of course it belongs in gothic, though I don't think someone would be wrong to mention doom elements in it, as it's quite similar to the Draconian Times era as well. That said though, I'm still not convinced and find it just as boring as their live shows are.

try Moonspell, Tiamat and Paradise Lost ( for example Draconian Times or Icon) then you will understand it. but yes Im agree that we have to find another genre name for these kind of gothic cause Within Temptation is very very different than Paradise Lost!!! thats why genres are lame sometimes. take it easy.

Sounds like "Icon", but so boooooring! Unoriginal and uninspiring. I liked only 2 songs - "Faith Divides Us Death Unites Us", "Last Regret". Greatest dissapointment for me this year My favorite album is "Draconian Times" - it's like with Tiamat - "Wildhoney" remains THE BEST album and nothin can top it. But if we compare the last albums of these bands - I say Tiamat! It's not perfect, but at least refreshing. Paradise Lost .......just flat!

if you are a lover of the past and also of the angry side of PL how could that your 2 fav songs are the most "calm" ones. IMO songs like as horizonds end and the rise of denial are surely great and also closer to the old PL comparing them to those 2 you've mentioned.

I didn't say I hate later PL albums, I just said "Draconian Times" is my favorite - and it's not so heavy/angry at all, by the way...
I said that I like those 2 songs - noone said they should be angry.
I judge music not for its heavyness but quality (my own subjective opinion), to say it in a few words: "I like what I like" - it can be Enya, classic music or Dimmu Borgir - If it touches my soulstrings, I like it, if not...... and this album NOT!

Bah, pretty mediocre for me. The title track is one of the best tracks in my collection, but everything else just doesn't cut it. In Requiem was not as heavy, but was fairly better overall, imho.

This is incredibly solid (8,5/10). Imo their best since "Draconian Times" as well as one of the best goth-metal albums of the last decade. But I think it's going to be just an isolated case in their discography (which has become a bit boring after 1995): I've read "Tragic Idol" will be very 'melodic'. Not that I have something against 'melodic' metal (?), but speaking about Paradise Lost I associate catchiness with albums like "One Second", "Believe In Nothing" or "Paradise Lost"... Their most mediocre. And even this album is damn catchy! But at least it has a powerful and overwhelming sound, with one of Nick's best performances... We'll see about that...
