Something that makes doom metal very unique is slow tempos. It gives the music a certain emotion that makes man feel that he is floating. He drifts away from reality to a point where he feels that he's on the verge of death. Deep grunts cause depressing emotions to circulate man's veins. The slow tempos alter his mind's state of consciousness. Violins cause his spirit to depart from his body. Finally, the clean female vocals grow goose bumps on his skin while slowing down his blood circulation. Eventually, man closes his eyes. After the last second of the CD passes, man feels DOOMED. That is the atmosphere Where Lovers Mourn creates. This is mostly apparent on the tracks "The Cry Of Silence", "Reversio Ad Secessum", and "It Grieves My Heart".

Great debut album !
But I think they've kinda ruined the track "The Solitude" here.
The version on the "Frozen Features" EP is imo a lot better, dispite to the poor sound quality.

I'm currently a big fan of Draconian. I've now listened to all their studio albums, but for the moment this one seems to be their best in my opinion. There is so much variety in this album, from the absolutely epic 'The cry of silence' (You'd be forgiven for thinking it was influenced by the MDB song of a similar name), to the death metal leanings of 'Silent winter' and the sorrowfully enhanced 'It grieves my heart', which serves as a brilliant closer to the album. The female vocals work very well, even on the fully acoustic 'Akherousia', even though the song itself seems to be a fifth wheel compared to how significant the other tracks are. A great way to start if you're interested in modern gothic doom metal.

A tremendous debut, from one of the best gothic doom metal bands around. The songwriting is dark, powerful and miserable, but also beautiful. The melodies are enchanting throughout, and the combination between the two vocal styles is very impressive and amongst the best in the genre, it's a perfect example of a beauty and the beast album imo. "The Cry Of Silence" is an outstanding opening track, but "Silent Winter", and "The Solitude" are also outstanding tracks, the rest I'd pretty decent too.

I Think its a good album but not a legendary one.

I basically agree. Still I prefer the debut to most of their output that came after the sophomore.

Damn, this my favorite Draconian album. The violin lines, the melody, the lyrics, everything just so well done. Of course, we know, the band went to a slightly different direction after this one.
