Every couple years Phil McSorley (vocals, guitars) and Erik Wunder (guitars, drums, everything else) under the moniker Cobalt pull a "Darkthrone" - that is basically cross the country, meet up and crush out an album together. 2009 saw the duo collaborate and unload the massive Gin on us all.

Musically, the album ebbs and flows a bit like waves pounding on a shore? the tracks seem to come and go alternately, with some crashing down like a swell against the rocks in a violent display of force, and others receding peacefully and calmly away with a lull that conceals the riptide underneath.

Listened to it for the first time in a long time. I love it, a lot more so than I remember liking it in the past.

This is delicious black metal.

Eater of Birds is totes better, but this is indeed very good.

Eater of birds is more intense, but gin has this Tool vibe I really like. It's like tool going black metal.
Still not sure which one I prefer, though.

Such a good album. Not as massive as Eater of Birds, but it's smarter and clearer.

A few songs into this, and it's rather intriguing. So Eater of Birds is generally considered to be Cobalt's best album?

Nope, Gin's the one that gets more acclaim than Eater of Birds, and that's how it should be.

Gin is the more popular, but that's probably because many people don't bother to look further back in their discog, but Eater of Birds is the more consistently higher rated if you look around (here, MA, RYM). Rightly so, more focussed than this is.

^ Naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. Eater of Birds might be the more extreme and dark album but I can't agree about the consistency. To me, some of the instrumentals on Eater Of Birds cut a bit of the flow from the album. I love its ferocity though. Depends on what you want. I like Gin more when I want a more intricate and intelligent approach to the savagery.

The drummer tries a bit too hard. I liked it, especially "Two Thumbed Fist".
