Tristania is for one more time in the controversial eye of the cyclone. The first time was when Morten Veland ceased to be a member of the band. The second was when the charismatic and adored by the fans of the band (and of gothic metal as well), Vibeke Stene, left. But the flames of controversy hadn't risen that much, not until recently when their 6th full-length album came to the surface, the 1st with Mariangela "Mary" Demurtas on the female vocals. Yet, this isn't the only change on the line-up, only two of the founding members remain in the ranks of Tristania, Anders Høyvik Hidle and Einar Moen, although Osten still partakes as a guest vocalist which is very welcome, he has also written half the lyrics of the album.

I listened to this album one more time to just see what's that I dislike so much about it.

Honestly, I have nothing against this vocalist change in Tristania as long as the new one could deliver the same sort of feelings I could get from any strong musical attempt. No ! Not at all,

I don't mean again that Tristania must have been always going on with the same style or structure of songs. Let's just see this album regardless of who made it and what is the background.

Seriously, it's not a quality music, some songs are too bad that I can't even go on with listening to them up to the end. This is not what I call "evolution", it's exactly the other way round, 1000s of steps backward. But what makes me terribly disappointed that it could be ok if it was published under another band name, but unfortunately it seems that all the appreciation they received is due to the name "Tristania". Really, this album is one of weakest albums in genre, even in comparison to the other weak bands with the same style that released albums in the same year, they could stand on top of it without even trying, but actually they're not named " Tristania".

It's interesting to see such things happen, that a band gets this much of attention while the album is not worth it.

It's hard for many fans to watch bands evolve so much and to travel so far from their roots, their roots to which we already have an emotional connection. It makes people feel left behind, sadly.

In one word: word.

In more words: I agree. As I was listening to the new Sirenia album lately, I took a trip down the memory lane and dug up Beyond The Veil, which I still consider one of my all time favourite albums. And yes, it's exactly that: a nostalgic trip down the memory lane with a strong emotional connection. When I discovered Tristania, it was something so new, ravishing, brilliant to me, that as I unveiled their music song by song, it took my breath away every single time. The reason I fell with it because their sound was unique; so dense, so rich and the atmosphere was so strong and powerful. Even with World Of Glass. It didn't matter that Veland was gone, because World of Glass was stylistically still very close to Beyond The Veil.

Ashes turned the table, the sound became more organic and raw. I still remember I was very disappointed by it, but with time, I got to appreaciate it, I just needed to look at it from a different perspective. Even the last three albums came to my liking, but still, on those three albums I feel they have some amazing songs, while the other don't impress me at all. No matter what, I like seeing what Tristania have become and if the music they make is to their liking and they feel they are telling the world what they want to tell, is absolutely fine by me. I respect and honour that. I just didn't get the "wow" effect, like I don't in so many other albums, regardless of the genre or band name. I came to acknowledge it's easiest for me to state I like/dislike an album, rather than the band itself.
