One of underground Black metal's latest big-hittersis Menace Ruine, a Canadian twosome that released two albums right after each other, with only a few months inbetween.. That was halfway '08, but sluggish yours truly discovered them only a few months ago. Well, apologies and all, but at least I'm offering you this review now. Let's do things chronologically all right? So first up is Cult Of Ruins, a review for The Die Is Cast will follow. With, hopefully, less than months in between.

(((O)))
I wish they would release something similar to this again even though I like their later folky albums. They Who Enter Caves and Bonded By Wyrd are the highlights I think, the guitar sounds so badass.

So do I, but in a sense I feel like that'd kinda undermine the peculiar aura that surrounds this album, because nothing else in their discography sounds quite like this. It's a completely unique creation unto itself. Kinda the same way I feel about the Lurker Of Chalice debut: I'd love to see Wrest put out more material for the project, but at the same time that'd also kinda ruin the eerie, mysterious status that that album and that album only has.

Sometimes it doesn't truly achieve the atmosphere it wants but goddamn if this isn't a pretty original take on black metal. The originality alone made me bump it to 8. Some real mezmering parts as Karlos wrote before.

Edit: a proper rating would be around 7,5 for me. It's still a somewhat immature style that Im glad they left to concentrate in the neo folk aspects. A wise decision.

Edit after some months: I'm sorry guys but the more I listen to this the less good it sounds. It IS original for black metal and it has some good ideas but mostof the time they do not translate well from paper to practice. The execution is simply not there. I'm SO glad they ditched this sound, clearly not for them. The fact that they released The Die is Cast the same year is mindblowing considering the differences in sound and quality. The only reason I don't go lower is because there are in fact some nice moments here but like I said: Bad execution. The are artists out there that make this noisy, industrial-like sound with their dissonant black metal way better.
