1997's Whoracle was a huge step for the Swedish band In Flames as it was really a change in their peculiar sound. Even if you can hear it a little bit throughout their previous release, The Jester Race, this change is obvious on Whoracle.

First of all, I want to point out that Bjorn Gelotte played both guitars and drums on this album, which is unchanged compare to The Jester Race and a real performance. At this time, the line-up included three guitar players with Glenn Ljungstrom, Jesper Stromblad and Bjorn Gelotte.

Talking about an In Flames album is very difficult, most people hate Music like this because is not pure Death Metal and say all kind of elitist stuff, Well Yes In Flames is not pure Death Metal I am sure, In Flames is what we call nowadays Gothenburg Metal or Melodic Death Metal, I am going to put all those things aside and I'll review this album in the most objective way , let's start shall we?

Very good album but for me, personally, I think that The Jester Race is superior. Both outstanding albums.

I like this album, the production is very clean, although Friden's vocals are slightly weaker compared to the earlier releases. Most of these songs are pretty fast-paced, but it suits the band when they go down that route to be honest.

Most of these songs are pretty fast-paced, but it suits the band when they go down that route to be honest.

On the contrary, I find that their fast-paced leanings engender a more generic sound. Its during their slower passages that the band really shines IMO.

They weren't generic at the time though. In Flames helped pioneer that particular sound.

True. Generic or not, still sounds like ass

Couldn't disagree more with both the fast/slow comments and the generic one.

Pretty good stuff on this album, especially the songs with acoustic guitars ("Gyroscope", "Dialogue With The Stars" and "Jester Script Transfigured"). Classic In Flames material, not the whole album though.

Relistening to the IF catalogue, I find their early-era albums to be slightly overrated, the mid-era to be underrated. Haven't gotten to the newer ones yet. This one is probably my least favorite of the pre-RtR albums. Whoracle and Worlds Within the Margin are stellar, but apart from that I only find Jotun, Episode 666 and Jester Script Transfigured good nowadays. I remember loving this when I started out listening to metal...

Been revisiting this after several years.
Slightly better than I had in mind, uprated it from 7.2 to 7.5.
The first five tracks are really promising.
Gyroscope is by far my favourite track from this album.
Unfortunately, the second half of the album is pretty disappointing for me.

i love this album, i only wish that the production was a bit better (its too shrill, i had to tone it done on audacity), and 22 years later i like even more then the day i bought it.

I'm revisiting this album time to time and I'm still hooked everytime. Maybe more. For me this is better than Jester Race for sure.

Good album but "The Jester Race" is better IMO. First three tracks, Morphing into Primal and Episode 666 are great tracks, the rest is alright.

This will always be my favorite In Flames album. It is imo nearly a perfect album. Clean production, awesome melodies, unusual and interesting lyrics, and a great sense of force and energy which early In Flames was known for.
