This is a fake live album created in the studio with overdubbed crowd noises (mostly negative abuse) provided by fans.
Peter Steele originally took "Hey Pete" from Jimi Hendrix's "Hey Joe" (composed by Billy Roberts). He only changed the name.
The original cover features Peter Steele's anus. On subsequent issues alternate artwork was used for the re-issue two years later, to a green & black version of the 1493 painting by Michael Wolgemut, The Dance of Death. The album's title is an obvious pun and reference to Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species.
On the re-issue the song "Paranoid (Black Sabbath cover)", which was their first song recorded with Johnny Kelly on drums, was added as a bonus track. The original name for the album is "The Origin Of The Feces (Not Live At Brighton Beach)." Brighton Beach is where Type O Negative hail from in Brooklyn, NY.
