2010 is long over, and I still have not heard an album that was better than Haken's Aquarius. Hailing from England and featuring two To-Mera members: Richard Henshall, who mostly plays the guitar but also keyboards like in his other band, and Tom MacLean playing the bass instead of guitar. There is also a guitar player from Linear Sphere, and all other members are involved only with Haken. Overall, the level of musicianship is outstanding.

This album is quite a surprise. New bands often make the mistake of trying too hard to show the world how good they are, and to put so many ideas in the music that all coherence is lost. Haken has a lot of ideas and they know how to play their instruments, but they never show off too much and they managed to make the album sound as a coherent entity.

You need to listen to this album at least 3-4 times before you realise how great it really is.

That is true for most album IMO, and it might take even more times very often.

Thats true. Most albums that I like on the first listen get boring too fast.

Great album full of great moments...Seventh Wonder's release beats it, but 2010 was great year for prog

Three listens changed my score from 6 to 8, planning to listen again, hoping to find something awesome I overlooked.

A lot better than I remember it being. Lots of fun and payoffs, despite lacking the simple charm of Visions. I'll give it another listen, but I can see this going up to a high 8-9.

My hot take: this album is terrible. The songs are overlong, boring and badly put together. They contain some ridiculously jarring fragments, just check the very beginning of the first song. The singing is totally, utterly, overwhelmingly abysmal. All the vocalist does is naaaaaa naaaaaaa naaaaaa, with varying numers of a's. There is not a single memorable melody on this painfully overlong record. The singing is so annoying, that I find it hard to sit through some songs.

Daniell hates this album

Fair enough on every front, similar to how I feel about *ahem* Mercyful Fate. I won't deny anything you said, some of that jarring and silliness actually appeals to me. 5 seems very generous based on everything you've said.

"Terrible" starts with a 5 and goes downward. So 5 is the highest rating I could possibly give. Let's say that this 5 is for ambition, decent musicianship and an occasional good idea.

And no, I don't hate the album. If I did, the rating would be a 4, at best.
