Basically, with heritage the band hads broken new grounds. The problem with Opeth(or rather that is precisely what makes them second in the Bands list) is their constantly changing music. However with Watershed, Opeth had created an amazing sound for themselves which they could have pursued it.
Coming back to Heritage, songs like Haxprocess, I feel The Dark, The Devil's Orchard and Folklore are top Opeth stuff. Only Mikael could have pulled up something like that. The riffs are eerie and forebooding so are the vocal lines. Nepenthe, basically had a great vocal line but the wierd percussions and the riff kind of spoilt what could have become a beautiful and an emotional song.
Slither doesn't match up to the Opeth brand.
Even the songwriting is kind of disappointing because words like "Lies" "Father" "Mother" used too much. Recurring themes were seen in Watershed.
But production, performance wise a big full marks.
I'll give it an 8.75.

Had to delete my previous post which mostly praised this album. Honestly, none of the songs have stuck with me... in fact its boring me to tears. Very self-indulgent album from mastermind Mikael Akerfeldt, which ultimately falls flat under its own weight. An homage to 70's prog-rock wasn't what we needed from the mighty Opeth. Should have left Procupine Tree to deal with with progressive rock heritage.

People like music, or they don't. They are allowed to like/dislike music without any background. Mocking others for tastes different from your own is rude. Live and let live.
Also, I'll publish the review of Heritage this weekend. Get your angry axe ready, because it won't be a 10...

As a musical piece is great, you can not deny that.
As an Opeth album, not what we've expected. It has a new melody, which is great, but we surely miss the typical Opeth riffs and the turning point from clean to growl vocals.
I would give it an 8

Nice to see Opeth flexing some musical muscle and showing off their range. God forbid the metal kiddies can't sacrifice a goat every song. 10+

Opeth is moving to a different direction (hope they don't end up doing crappy music as so many "evolved bands"), but for now I think the album is fine. It's not Blackwater Park, but is a good album anyway. Damnation was indeed a terrible album, but somehow Heritage manages to walk down the same path but in a much better way.
Really looking forward for a Latin-American tour

This really isn't good album, and Im not comparing to previous opeth albums, too much ballast all over the record, its unable to grasp my attention for the whole hour, there are good even great moments but someone should cooperate with Mikael on writing process because he evidently did this record for himself...

This album is a reminderer of the reason why musicians with huge creativity have side proyects... Swäno wanted to make 80's rock, Nightingale was born, Lucassen wanted pure prog rock, Guilt Machine was born... If Åkerfeldt wanted a prog rock-jazz-folk band, he could just make one... The album isn't, its just not quite Opeth... Damnation was still Opeth, this just isn't...

I love it that all the fanboys are so butthurt that Opeth decided to explore the music more and show off some progressive talent Huge credit to Opeth for not pumping out the same old same old, cd after cd. BEING the musical geniuses that they are, this cd shouldn't be a surprise to anyone.

Opeth has always been a prog band with death metal elements. I think being completely caught off guard by this is ridiculous. The ensuing argument just looks like prog rock elitists in a screaming match with death metal head bangers.
To the head bangers, things change get over it.
To the prog rockers, your taste in music doesn't make you open minded genius. It seems to be making you kind of arrogant.

Gave it a third listen before rating on the off chance it would finally "click" like Watershed did. No such luck although I don't completely hate it anymore. It has some nice parts and it has some parts I don't care for. I'm not really a prog rock fan so it just doesn't do much for me.
And I can't be the only one who was totally caught off guard by the lyrics "Feel the pain, in your brain, insane" and busted out laughing. Usually Opeth lyrics are pretty good but man...

Such a great album. I dont why people are complaining about lack of death metal elements. They have always been a prog band first (except for maybe their first two albums.

Opeth could have done this much better, I think, but maybe it's just the way Åkerfeldt intended.
I don't know ..., I was mildly dissapointed when I heard this album, contrary to Damnation album which I love.
It has some very good and promising moments, but Åkerfeldt has to spoil those moments and atmosphere with some "progressive wankery", which seems totally out of place sometimes.
My favourite song is "Marrow Of The Earth" - sounds the most "opetish".
The album is not bad, but I am bored a little bit. Maybe I was expecting something if not genious, than on the level of previous albums, but this seems just bland to me.
I have always been more into this mellow side of Opeth, not growls. I really started to appreciate the extreme side of Opeth not so long ago. Yes, I can stomach "no growling"
On the other hand, maybe I am not much into progressive rock, but I have heard some and If I must compare - Heritage is nothing extraordinary.
Something is missing in this album .... maybe some memorable song or something ...
