It looks like Ensiferum, it sounds like Ensiferum, but is this actually Ensiferum?

I, like most Ensiferum fans, was rather disappointed upon initially hearing the band's 2012 effort Unsung Heroes. The album's pacing was much slower than the much-heralded From Afar, the atmosphere rather mellow in comparison to their other works and the sense of composition more subdued and subtle. As most metal listeners know, the first few listens of an album can be deceiving; I mean, after all, how many of us truly wrapped our heads around Opeth's Blackwater Park the first time we listened to it? I don't mind spending some time with the albums I have at my disposal and giving Unsung Heroes a number of listens has proven to be one of the greatest rewards this habit has given me as of late. Unsung Heroes is, for all intents and purposes, quite unsung (no pun intended, of course).

Tracks 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 and 8 are actually not bad, better listen than One Man army.

Never actually understood why this album is so 'hated' by their fans. It has kantele, it has, flute, it's folk, it's epic, it's atmospheric, melodic, fast. It gives 'Victory Songs' vibes. Definitely, does not deserves 6.9/10, but way much more, but, hey, it's just my opinion...

How stupid have I been to trust the ratings of that albums for so many years. I never gave the album a fair chance though Ensiferum is one of my favourite bands. Now I finally do, and it's already one of my favourite post-Jari Ensiferum album! Just behind From Afar and Thalassic. Can't understand the hate at all. This will serve as a lesson for me now, I shouldn't always trust ratings, even when it's 500 people.

I actually don't think this is that bad of a release either tbh. It's clear they had began to loose their magical spark by this point, and from here went down the generic route, but they still had some quality moments here and there, so not all was lost.

After so many glorious battles and adventures, Väinämöinen (Finnish folklore hero and band's mascot) has now sheathed his sword... The cover art perfectly describes this album. So, we have fewer fast-paced riffs and energy - more ballads and an overall softer sound. Not a bad album though, it has some highlights, like: "Retribution Shall Be Mine", "In My Sword I Trust", "Pohjola" and "Burning Leaves". Sadly, the band chose this ultra-melodic, mellow direction from here and further. I'm not a big fan of it, but hey, it's still a quality Folk Metal.
