In Leviathan, the book, not the band, Hobbes, the philosopher, not the stuffed tiger, described life in the state of every man's war against every man as "...nasty, brutish, and short."

The same could be said for Landmine Marathon's Gallows.

Their latest features just seven tracks and just under 30 minutes of visceral, raw(r!) grinding death punishment. Nasty. Brutish. Short.

I have enjoyed Landmine Marathon for a long time now, pretty much since I started listening to the heavier side of metal, starting with Wounded I progressed throughout their discography. I reached Gallows and I knew after three solid releases they would not let me down.

The album enters with a strong presence, the shrieking guitar leads into the amazing voice of Grace Perry. Grace Perry, ah? the highlight of this album; her voice is raw, powerful and mind-boggling. In songs like "Three Snake Leaves" and "Cloaked In Red" I was astounded by such a voice, I'm not saying this just because she is a woman either - her voice has a power the blasts most others out of the water.

rawrrawrRAWR! riffriffriff pound pound pound screech ROAR! thud thud thud RAWR!

Gallows is just under 30 minutes of good old asskicking deathgrind fury, raw(R!) enough to make old-timers like me tear up. And tear up the house.

I just saw them with Warbringer. Pretty good show.

I'll have to check this out as I loved the last album.

This album is great. Perry's vocals, though tiresome at times, are really convincing for a death metal band of LM's level, and the rest of the band are amazing with their respective instruments. The only thing i can say is that the album could be a little longer, but i guess that's the death metal way of doing things nowadays.

I would call this album a Death Metal Marathon if it weren't for its length (under 30 minutes). Sometimes going fast, sometimes slow and sometimes going at mid pace this band presents us with some fine death metal.
