Shovel parting earth and an unnerving scream signal an imminently approaching force. A force to be reckoned with it is one which mouths to you your own doubts and brings you to question your own sanity. The listener will find themselves in a position from which they cannot move, fastened tight within a straight-jacket of exceptionally resilient musical compositions.

Wow, their is alot going on within each song, even if he has shortened them up a bit this time. I am going to need to listen thoroughly to really dissect this album. Terrific stuff.

Not bad.

So "Not Bad" gets a 10 from you? Does bad get a 9? I'm sorry if i sound a little rude, but either your opinion on the album changed drastically from when you wrote that comment to when you last updated your rating for the album, or you have no idea how to rate an album.

Yet another sloppy mixture of prog and melodic black metal, albeit with more of an extreme feel and less saxophone abuse. This guy just stands on the edge of being able to deliver so much more but never knows when to cut down on the bullshit. A high 6 or low 7 is in order here in my opinion - moments of brilliance held back by a convoluted execution. He needs to condense his ideas and focus on playing out one riff at a time before throwing the kitchen sink at it.

Does Ihriel sing on this or not? She's listed on the band page (guest musician) but not on the album page. If not, probably won't bother with it, as I wasn't too impressed with AngL.

I'm pretty sure I remember hearing female vocals somewhere, so I'm assuming it's her. Very scarce if I recall correctly - admittedly I was more focused on trying to navigate through this mess and wasn't too focused on whether or not he brought the wife around to help.

She sings in "Departure". Just a few seconds, so don't bother Anyway, this one is nothing like Angl.

Thanks. I like Peccatum and Star Of Ash, so I was hoping for a duet or something. I don't reckon Ihsahn's voice suits the music he does solo (based on AngL). He need to either do something different with his voice, or go back to black metal. The proggy stuff and the rasp just don't gel for me.

No, I did not like this. "The Adversary" was a great album with some brilliant moments, the same goes for the two releases after that one, but not really as good. "Eremita" is... nothing new in my opinion. I feel that Ihsahn can do much more than release the same album again. This time I'm pretty much fed up with it. Live up to your potential, damn it! I'm dissapointed even though my expectations weren't that high to begin with.

Yep, two great bands. I didn't dig too deep in Adversary and Angl yet to compare, but I think he is doing great with prog his latest releases. When I first heard After, I also complained about his vocals but I got used to them later.

I'm curious as to what you would cite as "sloppy" and "bullshit." I've listened to it everyday basically since I bought it and I thought all the mixture of genres felt natural and were well executed. Maybe some of the songs on this album compared to the last two are less complex, but as a whole album, it really feels varied yet cohesive. All of it just makes sense and I like how he managed to use the Sax differently on this album. Alot of people rag on the saxophone but I really like it. I hope you're not one of those fans of his who just hopes hes going to go back to playing Emperor type songs because that's just not going to happen. He's relatively young, and I feel like all his solo albums speak very differently for themselves and this album was a great follow up to After. I mean, who knows, the next album could end up being the heaviest thing he has ever written--he's pretty unpredictable.

I've listened to it twice now and honestly I just can't give it any serious dedication because I keep picking apart pieces that I find to be out of place. I've found all of his solo work to be like that - to me it sounds out of focus, as if it contains a wide variety of interesting elements that unfortunately don't gel together either because the elements he's chosen don't work cohesively for me or simply because he fails to execute the combining process efficiently. That being said, I'm hardly a fan of Emperor (Anthems and the split with Enslaved were both good in my opinion) so this isn't one of those biased opinions from someone upset at the change in direction from a symphonic black metal band to an extreme progressive metal project.

OH my god this album is luscious.

Agreed with the consensus: it's even better than the glorious After. Take everything you loved from After and make it more streamlined, more focused, more beautiful, and more mature. End result is THIS ALBUM.

I haven't listened to any of Ihsahn's solo stuff since Angl, but now my curiosity is piqued.

Also, I wonder if Ihsahn and his wife call themselves by their respective nicknames around the house hahahahah

I personally prefer After to Eremita, but what is offered here is really good too! It didn't make my Top 20 list from last year, but it's still a grower and and has much packed into it.

After is much better than this, was an epic album. But I still need a few more listens to digest Eremita. The Grave is "odd" but with nice drums. Maybe without Grief + The Grave this album would be better...

After was considered by many to be Ihsahn's most ambitious work, so I guess that it's not surprising that the album's follow-up, Eremita, seems pretty overshadowed. But honestly, Eremita seems to be the real first foray Ihsahn made into experimental territory. Not to say that Ihsahn's first few releases weren't experimental in some way (to me they had more in common with influences from progressive rock than being directly an experimental musical direction), but Eremita certainly stepped up. Whilst the average song length is notably shorter than on After, there is still so much going on. The hooks in "Introspection", the paranoia of "The Eagle and the Snake" and "The Grave" (the latter indulges in its usage of jazz), the beautiful contrast of light and dark in the album closer-it all works really well. Perhaps this album would take a few more listens than After to make the listener understand what's going on, but well worth it in my opinion. Another reason why Ihsahn is currently one of extreme metal's frontrunners regarding solo careers.
