Halestorm is, as the name of their sophomore album suggests, a strange case. On the one hand, they have demonstrated with singles like "It's Not You" and their raucous, thrashy cover of Skid Row's "Slave To The Grind" that they are more than capable of cranking out an exceptional mélange of respectable hard rock and heavy metal when so inclined. On the other, there is a very distinct element of radio-oriented streamlining and blatant commercialism that restricts their potential. At this stage in their career, I still consider Halestorm a guilty pleasure, and I really do not want this circumstance to persist.

What the... I had completely written these guys off as a toothless pop band, but I couldn't have been more wrong. I like how they dare to be unapologetically catchy and mainstream, but then suddenly bite your face off. If this is what's playing on the radio these days, I have no objections.

Rather commercial for here, ain't it? (not that I'm complaining, though. Great album.)

Very surprised to find this band here as I do not believe they really belong on Metalstorm as comparable bands like Evanescence (in my opinion a better band, especially on their lesser known post-Fallen releases) are blacklisted, but perhaps future material may prove me wrong. This exemplifies music I would have gotten into heavily in middle or high school, yet ultimately have grown out of since my late teens.

This album sounds more like a mix of Nickelback and Avaril Lavigne than Evanescence.

Slightly underwhelming compared to the debut, mainly because the album takes a downward slump in quality towards the end, but once again the best songs are at the beginning. I mean, Halestorm know hot to kick the jams out and give a damn good first impression, but then again, maybe they can't ever get a fully consistent record out where all 12 songs are as solid as each other. Whatever, songs like 'I miss the Misery' and 'Beautiful with You' are songwriting gold.
