I don't get the hate for this band. Sure it's not amazing but it's pretty decent to good stoner doom a la Electric Wizard with some added vocal effects.

What hate? I haven't come across hate for this band.
Live they are awesome. Seen them about five times now and every single time they are great.

Ok, I'm definitely exagerating but the votes here are pretty bad and in Metal Arhives it's either a high one or a very low one. I basically see no middle ground.
And yeah, I definitely loved their live set at Roadburn. But I totally fucked up that year because I ditched Agalloch for Saturnalia Temple and now that the former is history, I can't forgive myself.

Well the 5 is by a Sabaton and Babymetal fan
And the two lower, well, no idea what got into their puny brain to vote the way they did.

Primarily the fact that I think this album sucks...
I know you get defensive whenever someone dislikes something that you do, but grow up with the juvenile insults.

From my end, I just dont see how this could be offensive enough to get anything lower than a 5-6. I can understand if someone finds it average but not really bad.

Personally I just found songs like the title track and Ancient Sorceries to be nauseatingly repetitive and drab, while the rest were more on the 'meh' side. Those few songs that I found dreadful brought my rating down quite a bit. If every song on the album had the fat trimmed and the stupid vocal effects cut out I could see myself giving it a 6 or so. Just my opinion though, 'stoner doom' type styles aren't typically my cup of tea to begin with.

Just had a skim through the title track. I think I have to go with Alex here, sorry Rod. What's with that amateurish plucking style? It's really grating and sounds like someone who only picked up a guitar a week ago. The vocals are really weak too. He clearly can't sing for toffee and it sounded like they tried to cover it up with a crazy amount of psychedelic effects. Haven't heard anything else from this though so can't judge as a whole, but the title track is definitely one of the worst doom songs I've ever heard.

Ancient Sorceries doesn't sound especially bad though. Very ordinary and not particularly interesting I guess, but ok.

Well, at least I got a decent explanation even though I don't really agree. I thought the effects worked well enough and it's not like there are so many great signers in stoner metal to begin with. It ends up being more about how it matches the mood rather than real skill.

I've seen them live and I do recall enjoying them a lot, maybe even more than on album.

Well if the rest of the album is a tad better than Ancient Sorceries then it probably isn't too bad. I just don't get that title track...

Ill clearly go with Rod here. You will dismiss any doom thats a bit dragged out - this, Horse Latitudes and Bell Witch are just some examples. And the "amateurish style" in all those cases is a aesthetic choice, believing that these guys cant play is just . I enjoy this as its related to (although not as extreme) Horse Latitudes, lots of primitivism in this. Anyone have suggestions on related bands?

I'll dismiss any music that I find dreary, dull, poorly layered or just plain shit. Those bands all fall under those definitions in some ways according to my tastes. Nothing to do with anything being dragged out. I listen to drone remember, and a huge fan of expertly done repetition, so that's a nonsense accusation and a poor presumption of my music taste. Stop getting salty about bands I've disliked in the past =]

I'm sure this band can play their instruments, but they sure as hell can't write good songs, and actually sound amateurish as a result. Pretty pointless band to exist imo.

Joe is a pretty big drone and ambient fan, so I don't think that's really a fair argument to make.
I like Horse Latitudes quite a bit more than this, however I am curious to revisit this album now since you've compared the two

If I want to get something out of this, I have to listen to it as primitive and trancy. I dont think its as good as HL though, but I am not in a position to compare as I have listened to HL way more.

And Jooe has awesome taste in music.
