Leaves' Eyes had the clearest of visions on their 2011 studio release, Meredead. Their sights were set on locating their symphonic sound in a wonderfully authentic and atmospheric folk climate, venturing convincingly into a Celtic instrumental focus whilst retaining their Scandinavian fascinations. That bright day has passed as Symphonies Of The Night takes hold.

If its going to be produced by Alex Krull, yeah i'll pass. This group has been putting out mediocre material for years now. I understand that Liv and Alex are married but this group needs a new pair of eyes. They need to put out something a lot better then their last 2 records

They have had a few mediocre albums, yes, but Meredead was their best yet (or at least best in a while) and quite brilliant. Hopefully that was the start of a new trend for them!

Really you've been sitting on your ears judging by the comments, all of you. Silly people xD Btw Symphonies of the Night is just amazing, I strongly recommend it, even tone-deaf people (khuh) should buy it.

Pretty boring album D: while I liked the vocal here, the rest sounds pretty lazy. Almost no guitar work, this sounds too simple.

My thoughts exactly thus far... although this is only my first listen, so my opinions aren't solid yet. It just seems like this band has just lost its touch and become a mere showcase of Liv's voice. Vinland Saga was my favorite album of theirs, it was musically superior to their later efforts, though I enjoyed Njord as a whole as well. Not so sure about this yet.

How does this have a higher rating than Meredead? Meredead actually had some unique concepts and songwriting, and the songs stood out from each other.

SotN, however, is probably one of THE most generic symphonic metal albums I've ever heard, and that's saying something. Very bland album. Super disappointed.

Their worst album so far, boring and generic.

This album is a total maze for me. While I did like the more symphonic version of Leaves Eyes and their first three albums, I cannot say that I enjoy seeing them back to that formula after Meredead. One other thing I do not understand is all the hate regarding that album which had some of the most memorable tunes I ever heard on LE opus. Not to mention that it was more original and far more complex than this one could ever be.

They are still over-compressing the sound but less than the intensity on the previous records. This one can be called their most heavy work to date, but being heavier than the previous albums does not make it good. Also, they sort of abandoned their atmospheric metal elements and preferred to borrow a little bit from other notorious symphonic metal bands such as Nightwish (Hell To The Heavens) or even going back to Liv's former band Theater of Tragedy at some point (Angel And The Ghost).

Point is, other than 2-3 tracks, there isn't that final punch, that catchy element that made Leaves' Eyes memorable, which is a big loss since their song-writing is pretty simplistic. If the catchy element is gone as well, there ain't much to enjoy in this work.

This one might actually be something that older fans have been craving for, it will definitely piss off those that loved Meredead and it might attract new audiences (Nightwish and ToT fans), but that's it. At the end of the day, it is kinda bland. I wish they would've gone in the direction pointed on Meredead, but it was not meant to be...

P.S. This is probably the only record done by Leaves' Eyes in which I liked Alexander Krull's vocal contribution. Still, if it weren't for Liv's vocal performance, this album would be worse than mediocre.

I'm just hooked on Saint Cecilia so much. It's such a lovely song. Liv Kristine delivers so wonderfully.

A pale and boring album. I don't know how it is possible to build album just upon vocal skills. Vocal plays a vital role, but what about music? It must be touching and remarkable. Just simple riffs and synth atmosphere don't worse much.

Hoped this one would get me into the band, but no. I was listening to the opener, and I was thinking, "Yeah, this is cool. I like this." and that's still true. Without that first song this'd probably get like a 4 from me. After that, all we get is a few cool folky parts and a seemingly endless tirade of boring songs, only for it to finish off with you thinking, "Hang on, it's finished." This is pretty much an album of filler songs.
