This is an awesome album, but the album cover is probably the silliest one I've ever seen!

The rawness of this album's sound and Tardy's incomprehensible vocals make this my favourite Obituary record so far. 'Cause of Death' is a very good album, but i find that this particular style of production suits the nature of obituary's vocals perfectly.

I am not sure how influential this particular release was.
But for me this is best Obituary, together with Cause of Death (I used to prefer Slowly, but today I like them both more or less equally much).
The title track and Intoxicated stand out.

I'm just speaking without regard to the setting in which it was released. Death was influential, but not boring. They don't always have to coincide.

I absolutely love Tardy's vocals, they are so unique and probably the best I've heard in death metal. The album is impressive for it's time, lyrics were great, and the guitar tone is seriously heavy. I like how short and simple the songs were, maybe even too short at times, Words of Evil and Godly Beings for instance being under 2 minutes. I found myself repeating the title song many times when I first listened to the album I liked it alot, but some songs I found my self skipping, Skinkpuss being one.

I love this album from beginning to end.
Cause of Death and End Complete have a meatier sounding production but for me Slowly set the bar and I don't think they ever really bettered it.
Possessed, Death, Morbid Angel and Pestilence all had an important role in shaping the sound of early death metal but for me John Tardy's vocals were the first true example of the guttural roar we associate with DM today. He still sounds evil as fuck on this recording.

I bought this the year it came out and hated it.
Listening a zillion years later I don't know what my young thrasher mind was on about. This and their next two albums are really enjoyable.

The only Obituary album I care for, perhaps I would even go as far as to say that it's pretty good. It's not as unique as their later output, as it still possesses a significant amount of Celtic Frost infleunces (even some of the vocal mannerisms seem to be straight out of Tom G. Warrior's playbook), but it does a fantastic job at incorporating them into the death metal context, making it sound natural even tho Celtic Frost at no point was a death metal band.

100% approve! For me the best DM vocalist (Chuck and Travis Ryan close by).
And what a debut! Starting a great discography with no bad output and only to be topped by the best DM record ever - Cause of death!
So many killers: Internal Bleeding, Godly Beings, Slowly We Rot, Suffocation
and Intoxicated only to name some.
