01. The Black Page [Frank Zappa cover]
A cover of Frank Zappa's "The Black Page".
"The Black Page" is a piece by American composer Frank Zappa known for being extraordinarily difficult to play. It was originally written for solo percussion, and later re-arranged in several versions.
It is written in common time with extensive use of poly-rhythms, nested poly-rhythms, and poly-meters.
Legend has it that Frank would give "The Black Page" to musicians looking to audition for his band, and if you could play it and memorize it by a certain amount of time than you were good enough to be in his band.
The idea of this track originally came into fruition from wanting to gain a deeper understanding of complex rhythms, harmonies and melodies.
While attending the University of Windsor, this project was also used for a Diverse Musics course in which you had to record a cover version of any song of your choice.
It became sort of a jumble between an original composition and a cover, since there ended up being added sections that I wanted to personally include. I also wanted to have a recording for myself on which I recorded all instruments.
