What I said in my Staff Pick about Oceans Of Slumber's Winter still stands true. I still feel like a ton of bricks has fallen on me. The love for this album is still mainly about one key element, though - the voice of Cammie Gilbert that elevates this doom-infused prog metal to a completely different level of perception for me.

I feel like a ton of bricks has fallen on me. I don't know nor care what this band was without Cammie Gilbert but she makes this album perfect in its little imperfections. I'm floored by her voice. I'm in love with her voice. It scratches the very depths of my soul. This is an album I wasn't prepared to find... And, man, that The Moody Blues cover is just wonderful.

Listen to "Winter" or "Suffer the Last Bridge" or just go get the whole damn album. It's totally worth it.

And Idk how to feel about this new song. I really, REALLY loved Aetherial, and this newer song has definitely driven it home that they obviously intend on going in a completely different direction from Aetherial, which greatly saddens me.

My bad. So I don't need the rest of the URL? Cool.

And I agree on the song. I really enjoyed Winter, but this doesn't get to me as much.

Nope. Just the part behind the = in the url.

I enjoyed "Winter", but I was really hoping that was going to be, like, a soft point in the album. But it's really starting to seem like the whole album is going to be a lot more mellow, and focused on being really melodic.

It's funny how Chioreanu's artwork gives me incentive to listen to shit I wouldn't ordinarily listen to

This is definitely not something I would ever think to recommend to you. Lol

It feels oddly gratifying (despite me not actually knowing any of the members or having any involvement in the album) to see an upcoming band from my hometown to be discovered and Staff picked by somebody on the other side of the world.

@Ivor, before Cammie Gilbert they definitely were not in your scope of interest at all, Ronnie Gates was primarily an extreme vocalist (screams and growls).

I'll give it a peek tomorrow just out of curiosity, I'll admit that I'm not too big a fan of prog metal in its pure form, but extreme prog is something I'm more likely to enjoy. That's the weird thing with me, I guess, I'm usually not all that into it when it's just standing by itself, but enjoy it much more so when it's fused with other styles (BM, death, doom, whatever).

I wouldn't put money on it, but is this anything at all like Dreadnought? (the debut, not their most recent)

Ok. The current genre tag might be a little misleading regarding Winter, and should probably be fixed, but I've been waiting til I got the album and was able to hear the whole thing to know for sure if it needs fixing.

Their debut album, Aetherial is Extreme Prog, but this album is not. You might like Aetherial, but I'm still inclined to think that one may be a little too straightforward for your tastes, but please do check it out anyway - https://oceansofslumber.bandcamp.com/album/aetherial

And from what I can tell (I've only heard, like, 4 or 5 songs from the album), no, Winter is not anything like Dreadnought's debut. It's a mix of prog, doom and goth, with some occasional more aggressive moments, like how they were on their debut. There's also occasionally some backing growling/screaming from the guitarists and/or bassist, but Cammie sings through most of it.

Well it definitely sounds like I should scope Aetherial then, and maybe this new one as well because I really am a huge fan of progressive doom combos... it's a very underdeveloped style that can be pretty hit or miss, but is really cool if pulled off right. Thanks for the little overview

I bet 20 bucks you'll like this new album more than the debut. It's just much more musically mature and it sounds amazing to my ears. The debut was good but you know, just another extreme prog album. This is more, much more.

I rather like this, really good vocals (or at least the female ones, the extreme vox are passable) and I really like the atmosphere they've made for the most part. I'm not sure it really needs the extreme moments such as Apologue -it's an okay song but sounds rather out of place and I'm not sure it adds all that much necessarily to the album. On the whole though it's a big improvement on what I can remember thinking about the previous album, which is admittedly hardly anything

I assume you mean the album and not the Blue EP.

I wish I could love this album, but every time I listen to it I keep thinking that Dobber Beverly really needs to spend less time playing in his basement and more listening to metal drummers with both chops and taste (Dailor, Reinert, Lopez, etc.). Let the song breathe, man, and learn to listen to your bandmates a bit. It's okay to let them have some space of their own.
