There some moments on this album where it is shocking how much Katatonia is copying Paradise Lost. genarally it is a good album..

I just heard it today for the first time. After about 40 minutes of melancholy I decided that Katatonia was one of my important influences.

Their best album for me, so melodic and haunting. Their albums released after this were good, but this one is the band at their very best to be honest.

One of my favourite Katatonia albums. The music is really dark and Mike's growls compliment it perfectly.

An Excellent album indeed, however Im not really into the albums drum sound (too clicky for my taste), I much prefer the previous DoDS' explosive drum sound (I understand it wouldn't really work with the hypnotic vibe of this album though). I believe the drum sound on Discouraged Ones is actually much better sounding (more crunch to it) yet still keeping that amazing hypnotic vibe. Also I don't think Murder is as strong as the other five tracks (but still good), and I would have loved to have heard more of Jonas' clean vocals, since he makes the band for me and the album feels incomplete without a more balanced use of his cleans. Those are just nitpicks though.

Love this album! Mikeal's vocals are amazing and the constant flow of energy on this record is wall to wall praise! A timeless classic and a very memorable release

I'm definitely not hearing that. And none of PL's albums come even close to the quality of this masterpiece.

That being said, at first I thought the last three tracks were just a part of this album, but I later found out it's actually an EP (Sounds Of Decay) that was added to this album. Those tracks do make me like this album more, since it's longer and even more impressive, as well as having the same style as the album (6 songs) itself.

after a quick listen i can easily find some leads (as in songs "Brave" and "Murder") who look so much like the leads on paradise losts "Gothic".

I know they did an earlier version of the 5th track "12" which was called "Black Erotica", Renkse does the vocals on that version. It's not much different from the Brave Murder Day version, just more "gothic" and "keyboard heavy".

God, that riff on Brave has to be one of the most depressing things I've ever heard.

I love "Day". It invokes a deep sense of resurfacing sorrows; long-forgotten agonies--coming back from the waves we drowned them under--to be washed up along the shore of our dreams. Terribly gloomy and beautiful.
