Additional info
This is album is dedicated to the sacred ego, that wellspring of individuality and unique complexity. Sing the song of the Inner Voice. Recite the hymns to the Celestial Will. Rebuke all desire to succumb to corrosive idolatry?be it the militancy of extremity, the beneficence of untempered ideology, or the divinity of cherished relationships. Rebuke the impulse to capitulation, to hide beneath of hard shell of callous disregard and secede from the world. We surrender our power only to those worthy of wielding it. And we will not hesitate to strip authority from and war against all those that prove unworthy.

Recorded in 2017 by James Whitten. Mastered in 2018 by James Plotkin. Additional vocals by Emily McWilliams.

Thou is releasing three eps leading up to this album. Sounds a bit like hybris to me. The first song from the album sounds good.

...we are just slow, getting there... Surely one of the better albums 2018.

Am I just missing something here? I've tried with Thou several times to try to see what "the big deal" over them is exactly and I'm still not quite getting it. I hear little more than doom/sludge with harsh vocals over the top of it here, which a ton of other bands have done before and several with much better results. Sure, it gets a little more melodic at points, but that's still nothing new either. The reason for all the lavish praise over this band lately eludes me.

Yeah I'm in the same boat to be honest. Can't enjoy any of the releases of theirs that i've listened through.

Thou and Yob are truly the overrated doom bands of this generation, though I can just about enjoy Thou from time to time.

I like this album but then again I am probably the biggest sludge fan on MS nowadays. Its a bit light and there is a bit too much vocals here to be great, but its good album - top 5 sludge album 2018.

top 5 sludge album 2018.

Actually quite possibly is, but sludge has been incredibly weak the past few years. It's like suddenly no one can create a good sludge sound anymore.

Dont agree Hell s/t, and Caustic are milestones, Cult Of Occult are fun as well.
I dont have big hopes that the trendy us sludge bands from early decade that are releasing this year will produce anything that comes near to those.

Checked my 2017 list. The one and only sludge record was worthy was Leechfeast, everything else was a hybrid with post-metal or something else. This year seems to be carrying on the same theme, every sludge band I've heard sounds off in some way, even the Hell song from the split sounds kind of weak (though Primitive Man's side sounds great and massive).

[edit] That should have been 2018, not 2017

"Pure" sludge, nah, you're probably right, but the sludgecore type bands like Herder, Celeste, Harm's Way, Fange, LSM, etc have been dropping some pretty hot stuff lately. I'm good with that, actually a much cooler take on the sound if you ask me

Oh yeah, sludge+ bands are usually fine. Black, -core, death even grind goes nicely with sludge. I do miss the classic sludge sound from time to time though.

This album was a waste of time. No song stuck out, it just sounded like a wall of sound thrown at me and not a particulary attractive one.
