Dream Theater - New Album Coming In September

Progressive metal giants Dream Theater have announced that their new album will be self-titled for the first time in their career, which usually means it is a strong statement from the band. You can expect the album to arrive on September 24th via Roadrunner Records. Get ready for some new prog. Also, you can check out the band in the studio on the report below and maybe hear some new tunes.

Dream Theater was recorded at Cove City Sound Studios in Glen Cove, New York, with guitarist John Petrucci producing and Richard Chycki (Aerosmith, Rush) engineering and mixing. The album is also their first to have been written and recorded with drummer Mike Mangini wholly integrated into the creative process from the start.

Guitarist Petrucci stated: "I see every new album as an opportunity to start over. To either build or improve upon a direction that has been evolving over time or to completely break new ground. This is the first self-titled album of our career and there is nothing I can think of that makes a statement of musical and creative identity stronger than that. We've fully explored all of the elements that make us unique, from the epic and intense to the atmospheric and cinematic. We're incredibly excited about Dream Theater and can't wait for everyone to hear it."

I don't mean to bring up undoubtedly old arguments, but DT releasing their self-titled without Portnoy seems... wrong...

This should be interesting indeed.

My first thought was exactly that.

I think it's a dumb title.
They want to say "this is Dream Theater," but first of all; without Mike Portnoy you can't have all the elements that make/made Dream Theater to what it is. Second, this is the first time Mike Mangini was included in the writing process which logically means there are brand new ideas for this album.

That's what they are trying to address. "Don't be afraid of the changes, we're still the same".

You're not, and you should not only be afraid, but actually be happy to tell!

Yea sounds wrong in some way, but in other way we all know that they are true professionals, they know what they are doing! I think it will not disappoint at all because after 27 years of work they are making self-titled album, so they know that this album must be good! It's really sad that Portnoy is not part of it!

Dream Theater is what always currently is. It's just different without Porntoy. What I mean is 'just meh'.
Also it seems like it's a trend to swap one band's key figure and then record every 2nd album with titles like either 13 or the band's name itself...

"Dream Theater was recorded" - so they will spend an entire 3 months of fucking promoting it? Damn...

Looking forward to this release, but why is it called "Dream Theater"? Queensryche I can understand why they choose to, since there was a reason for that, but this is... I don't know what. .____.

I know what you mean, and their latest without Portnoy I found to still be very enjoyable, it's just that, and correct me if I wrong, Portnoy was a founding member of the band, I don't know if they parted on good terms but even if they did, naming this album "Dream Theater" is rubbing salt in the wounds methinks.

I'm happy that I will be able to listen to some brand new material from this great band very soon. I think you guys ought to be thankful for that, that artists like them are still coming out with fresh music. Whatever happened in the past, stays there, it already happened, please move on.

Nevuh! Kevin Moore DT is da only DT!

I'm excited since they don't have any albums that I didn't find worthwhile so I can expect this one to be good too, though clearly some are better than others. "Strongest work to date" is sounding just a bit crazy, sorry John. Maybe he's totally right and I'm going to eat my words but that statement combined with the self-titled name and "opportunity to start over" sounds like they're trying to put Mike Portnoy in the rear-view mirror. I'm sure it can be a bit hard to do that when people talk about how mediocre ADTOE was and the good ol' days when Portnoy was on drums.

But whatever, I'm looking forward to new music from them.

Guys, Dream Theater is the same old band! With or without Portnoy, they've moved on so get over it!!! If they choose to call this album like that so be it! We just have to wait to ear it and than make our conclusions if it is the "real deal"!

I'm tired...not of the band ...but from all of you suckers argumenting the fact that Portnoy isn't on the band and the band can't do this or that without him...and don't even try to judge them...they have to continue their work! You don't know more than they do, it's they're choice, it's up to them to decide what to do, with or without Portnoy, so deal with it!!!

It's their second album without him...get used to that, he doesn't come back, he's alright on Flying Colors, Transatlantic and Adrenaline Mob, and now in The Winery Dogs as it is...so leave him alone already!!!

so now he's not in any metal bands anymore. Unless you count Bigelf as metal, he's kind of sort of in Bigelf now. But they're more heavy rock than metal in my opinion.

I'm very happy with what he's doing, all of those bands are the shiznit and he's prolific. Now we'll see if DT can keep up with him . Or are we not supposed to be doing that? It's kind of hard to avoid comparing them, they're doing it to themselves and it's obvious.

I really don't get it. Mike Mangini is a great drummer, and why the hell people care about the album name in relation to "Portnoy isn't in the band anymore!" is beyond me. You guys think Portnoy himself even cares?

Oh, Portnoy definitely cares. He may not shout it from the rooftops, nor do I think he's that invested in the situation anymore, but I'm sure he cares.

I do think it's a bit late for DT to release a self-titled album - those are "statement" titles usually reserved for debuts or rebirths/redefinitions, and is anyone seriously expecting DT to make any radical changes to their sound at this point in their career? I'm expecting it to be yet another Dream Theater album. Hopefully a bit better than their more recent work.

Releasing their self-titled without Portnoy seems right for them so I don't see what is a big deal......It is not us who decide title for the new record and ofc then Portony fanboys apear crying over the title....like, he is gone since 2010, who cares! Not trying to get into "internet fight", or anything similar, just, people should really move on. I'm glad band is happy, hopefully this album will turn out nice

That's the same thought i have! People should carry on with their lifes...
In fact, we are no one to critisize their decisions, about the members or about the album title...it's their problem, their job!!
