Myrkur - Entire Debut Album Streaming Online

While the album will be officially out on the 21st of August 2015 via Relapse Records, a full stream of the eleven-song offering is now available at this location. Go listen to it! I don't see what's wrong with not knowing the capital of a country. People not living there aren't obligated to know.
I bet most people don't know which is the capital of Brazil, for instance =p

Anyway. listened to the stream. It's quite good.

So bad. That this gets exponentially more attention than other bands makes me laugh, especially those with women in them. Myrkur is just a shit marketing scheme that exists on a false presumption that being a woman in "black metal" is unique. Nope.

Woah, you tried real hard to come out as "trve black metal aficionado".

But, tell you one thing - your post sounds like frustrated metal fan seeing woman in bm scene. i have seen lot of punchbags like you on youtube masturbating their frustation on good bm videos.

So frustrated, yes. I can't stand when women in black metal, like Onielar for instance, have done more for the genre than Myrkur has or ever will, . Myrkur's shit and probably always will be, because Amalie Bruun is the definition of a poser. No one would give a flying fuck about this band if it was produced by a bunch of males. I'd skip it like 90% of the black metal bands I come across, because 90% of black metal bands are rubbish, whether a a man or woman makes it.

With all due respect, Onielar has had some slight coverage, especially in her own country. But my opinion is that DNS beats a dead horse, and that is the old school black metal genre. She makes a kind of black metal that has been done already by countless other bands, for better or worse. I admit that this band got exposure first because there is a woman behind it and she is the only member, but that doesn't mean she does not heavy the skills to back up her hype. I listened to this whole album, if she would drop the attempts to play orthodox black metal I think she could make a real masterpiece. The 90% you claim is your own opinion. I think that this genre is just stellar, 90% of it being good to great. This project included. Black metal is one of the most diverse genres of metal, one that has been constantly evolving and breaking boundaries for 25 years. To be honest, not all fans are stupid. If she would not have the skill to back up her hype, I am sure she would've been ripped off. Look at the Gallhammer chicks. That is the definition of being promoted for being chicks yet not having the skill to back it up.

Anyway, if you hate black metal and consider 90% of it being rubbish, why do you care about which artist or band receives more coverage within this scene? It's ilogical. I for example do not waste time on bands I dislike, much less on genres I dislike.

P.S. Ask those that know and listen to DNS how did they got to know the band. I'm sure 9 out of 10 people will respond 'because of Onielar'.

DNS was always lowest common denominator black metal that never brought anything new to the table, people with vaginas or otherwise. Quite well played, but very derivative regardless. Myrkur certainly has more identity to it, though not exactly the Future Of Black Metal (seriously electes, the defensive reactionaries on that thread there look more like your ilk).

Don't really agree that 90% of BM is good though. Not when you consider all the stuff that never gets attention and lingers in total obscurity (and for good reason).

I think why so many dwell on this band as opposed to others is how openly marketed Myrkur is as a female "only" band. DNS don't do that. They play their music and nothing else slaps listeners over the head with, "Oh, by the by, did you know Onielar is a chick? This means we're somehow better, or cooler, or more innovative, or..." I've seen a sickening amount of pretension revolving around Myrkur when there's really nothing to bust a nut over. Everything could be improved, sure, but in the end I still don't like how black metal bands, Myrkur included, come out of the woodwork and feel the need to label themselves this, that, and the other when all there really is to these bands is the music; which is not spectacular, in my opinion. I still stand by the thinking that if Myrkur were a bunch of sweaty dudes laboring over this poorly written anti-pander record, it'd get some views on the tabloids/YouTube channels, but nothing more - Myrkur gets more because Amalie's a woman who, based on the music, apparently discovered black metal a few days before thinking she's a goddess of music.

Aside on DNS, I would say that their stature came from their stage presence and faaaaaaaaar more professionally written and executed black metal. No frills black metal that's actually good>Myrkur's anti-pandering mediocrity.

Your apparent disdain for Amalie Bruun is misplaced though, and that Terrorizer front cover shows where it should be pointed at, i.e. those marketing it and stirring up the hype, bloating something out of proportion. That's a standard in all music, female fronted or otherwise. It's never equal. I think Bolzer are great, but I recognise they get way more attention than they deserve. Having a hissy over it does't change anything though. At the very least the hype of Myrkur goes some way in bringing non-sexualised females in black metal (or metal in general) to the forefront, with possible aims of normalising it one day. I get the impression you don't care about that though. You seem more concerned with abstract notions of "posers" and what have you.

Sorry, but what does it stand for?

Darkened Nocturnal Slaughtercult. A band with a female front person that electes seems to espouse as what a female fronted band should be. Even though, if you ask my humble self, she would be a far more apt example of a "poser" seeing as she's basically emulating the style, look and ideologies of the men that made the music before her. Nothing dangerous or game changing about her.

You're right about Myrkur being marketed as a female only band, but that doesn't mean the female behind this project is completely devoid of musical skill. There is a limit to how much you can try to market a mediocre or horrible artist. DNS may not market themselves as a female only band, since they are not female only, but they do have a slight advantage thanks to the fact that they have a female doing vocals. Like I said, ask the fans of the band how they got to know them and I can assure you that 90% of the answers will be because of Onielar. Myself included. Musicaly though, with the exception of a couple of song, they are dull. Also, Myrkur is pretty much a new project. It did not have the time to do something for the scene. DNS only contributed to the revival of the old school black metal scene, but musicaly speaking they were not innovative at all.

All the bands, and I mean all have a way of promoting themselves. Even the most obscure, no money - no fame bands do, most of them without realizing that this attitude in itself is a way to promote yourself. I think that artists who got some exposure are those who actually feel the pressure more than those who live in the shadow. Part of the reason why this chick got slightly more coverage comes from her past background too, I believe. But music speaks in the end, and she does make interesting music. I like her ethereal take of black metal, and while it may not sound all fresh, it is far better than the typical BM formula DNS plays.

I think Myrkur makes more interesting music than DNS. No offense, but I'm kinda tired of bands like DNS kicking a dead horse. There will always be a fan-base for old school black metal, but that doesn't change the fact that it has lost any ties with innovation in the 90s. It was thanks to bands like Watain that it got ressurected. But then again even they realized that you cannot be innovative by sticking to this orthodox style, thus they changed the sound on their latest album. Not surprising, those that worship their past BM releases were the ones who down-rated it.

Myrkur barely had its first concert. I skimmed some live renditions of some songs and every doubts I had about her were lifted. She may not play innovative BM, but she sure as hell can sing and in a very beautiful way and she sure is professional. And with her style, she has more chances to seem unique than DNS can.

If my own musical path ever got cluttered by corporate record companies and other bullshit, I wouldn't take it in the ass like Amalie has. If a band has a woman in it, they shouldn't focus on that fact, because it doesn't matter at all, in any way. The problem is that so many people give Myrkur a spin with the idea of it being done by a woman, that it's apparently amazing, and so on. It'd be nice if a band can be judged without bias, or have covers like the one you linked in mind. But, alas, apparently not.

Random bit: Myrkur could have taken their success just as appreciation, but in my opinion, Amalie's only sold out from bullshit reasons lending her fame she doesn't deserve.

Hmm, now that made me to think about it, because I personally thought the woman has somewhat impressive voice for that style of vocals but true that other than that she did nothing special and groundbreaking new.

DNS are really solid in all honesty, but not really relevant. If you're going to do everything the same as every other band then you might as well be judged on those merits. Bruun of Myrkur doesn't seem afraid of expressing her feminine side in her music, which is probably why all the men are getting their panties in a twist.

Listening to the new album now. Only a couple of tracks in but it's really quite good. A big advancement in sound from the debut EP/ demo, what ever it was. Not the future of BM I don't think, but definitely worth a listen for anyone with half decent taste,

So in other words, she should sit down, shut up and do what she's told, because you deem her not "deserving" of what fame she's been afforded coz you don't like her music? Maybe you'd like her to make you a sandwich too.

To be honest I don't really know what you're on about. You seem to have a misguided set of rules that musicians are supposed to follow, and are to be directly blamed for when they take opportunity that comes knocking. I don't see anywhere on the front cover of Terrorizer that mentions she's a woman, do you? You talk about bias, yet I suspect you're equating any media attention she gets with that fact she's a woman. Basically she's fucked either way. She could receive attention because of her music, yet people like you jump to the conclusions that she's getting it because she is a woman simply because you don't really like the music. I wonder if you would be so vocal if DNS were on the front cover. You're basically creating a self-defeating loop, then complaining about its existence. This idea of "selling out" is just pandering to archaic plebby metal axioms that should really be left in the past.

Hhahaha indeed. It never ceases to amaze me how the average metalhead denies any sort of prejudices against a metal band with a woman/gay/trans/donkey if its to his liking but automatically comments on it if he hates the music. This sort of issue makes me think that staying anonymous is the (sad) answer for many musicians. Man, imagine if one day it's revealed that a bunch of girls worked alongside Vindsval in BAN... I can almost read posts saying shit like "they got more mainstream now because of all the girl attention".

Hhahaha indeed. It never ceases to amaze me how the average metalhead denies any sort of prejudices against a metal band with a woman/gay/trans/donkey if its to his liking. This sort of issue makes me think that staying anonymous is the (sad) answer for many musicians. Man, imagine if one day it's revealed that a bunch of girls worked alongside Vindsval in BAN... I can almost read posts saying shit like "they got more mainstream now because of all the girl attention".

That would be amazing. I would probably become aroused on the spot. I reckon it would be a bit like the Velvet Cacoon fakery fiasco, where tons of fans suddenly did a U-turn and denounced the band. Only on a much bigger scale.

Listening to the new album now. Only a couple of tracks in but it's really quite good. A big advancement in sound from the debut EP/ demo, what ever it was. Not the future of BM I don't think, but definitely worth a listen for anyone with half decent taste,

Changing the tone of the thread... I'm halfway through the album and while I dont find it bad. I'm not all gaga about it. It just flows from ok to good. i dig the folky/ambient moments and those chants but my main problem with the album is that it changes gears to often and it makes the album a bit inconsistent. Like she hasn't decided yet which way she wants to go. Maybe she will nail her sound after another album.

Yeah there's some consistency problems I would say. I remember thinking that the debut whatever-it-was had similar problems, that it was maybe bit too Alcest-y for some / Burzum-y for others and didn't find much middle ground. I definitely enjoyed it though, but then I haven't listened to much new music in months so perhaps I'm being more forgiving.
