This is not the first time Anselmo did something like that. It's been going on for years now as far as I recall. Which means that what he said during Dimebash isn't a one-time bout of stupidity. I was shocked when I heard about his past more than what he did sometime ago, I mean I COULD take it as a stupid joke but apparently he is into it as you said. And somewhere I saw a photo of Metallica dudes were also giving the same salute, posing for a photo... just saying. I don't meant anything to justify what Anselmo did or such... Apparently it's an issue whether they show off what racist idea they hold or not. I don't even want to hear the music of the people who have this idea although they may not present it openly in their music. I can't see how people can separate the artwork from artist as they claim we can just listen to the music and ignore their ideas!! But how is that possible?!

And also I must mention another story from another metal artist... The guy was basically talking of his father who was his hero during his child... OK that is understandable, everyone has the idea of dads as heroes... hmm but he was also relying on the part that his father was part of Vietnam war... and I don't know I think it just sounded to me that one part of that heroic image he was narrating belonged to his father being part of Vietnam war which to me is:" OK... yeah your dad is your hero but for me you are part of the shameful war that you don't feel shy talking about it."

Conclusion? Some historical background is always enlightening and I think that would make bigger difference on how we perceive our music... and some of that historical background is even worse than a certain gesture or body language.

Coz music is entertainment and our ears don't discriminate based on ideas, they discriminate on sound.

I've been listening to his music for a long time and I've seen him with Pantera and Down. Despite anything he says, I don't think he's a racist person. Being a racist would mean he thinks one or more race is not as good as his and don't deserve equal treatment, rights, or respect. Phil Anselmo is an ass sometimes, not particularly intelligent, and probably has some prejudices, but considering his whole history as a public figure and his lyrics, I think it's hard to make a case that he is a racist person. Prejudiced, probably.

Considering how drunk he was, he could have done it for any massive number of dumb reasons.
