Inquisition - Booted Out Of Season Of Mist, Release Statement

Season of Mist has just released a statement announcing that they are no longer working with Inquisition. In a short statement, the label simply said: "Season of Mist are no longer working with Inquisition. There will be no further statement." This has generated some speculation, with claims that it might have something to do with Dagon's criminal record or the accusations that Inquisition are associated with racist or white power leanings. Dagon has previously denied any Nazi association.

The strongest accusations came from Daniel Gallant, a rehabilitated white supremacist who claimed that Inquisition guitarist/vocalist Jason "Dagon" Weirbach and drummer Thomas "Incubus" Stevens, "loved the white power movement" and openly professed "admiration for Hitler" when he drove a tour bus the band traveled on several years ago.

He acknowledged that Daniel Gallant drove a tour bus for the band, but the story Dagon recounted is much different. According to Dagon, he did have a conversation about Gallant's Nazi tattoos, but it was due to curiosity rather than admiration. He also claimed that Antichrist Kramer is not a white supremacist and No Colours Records derived its name from the black and white color scheme the company used for their releases. On the subject of "Crush The Jewish Prophet," Dagon stated that the choice to include the word Jewish in the song title was for the sake of clarity as much as controversy.

Excerpts from Jason "Dagon" Weirbach 2014 interview to Decibel: "And yes, [my 88MM side project] is what people-to a certain degree-think, but it's not a white power, Nazi? nothing. I thought, 'Well, shit.' One day I was watching, I think it was a documentary or I was reading books, you know, on all kinds of old military weaponry, and thought, 'Whoa, 88 millimeter. Yeah. That's, like, perfect. It's like Mz.412's kind of style of name.' And it's a brutal name, you know? That's exactly what it was. I mean, yes, it did cross my mind [that the number 88 has gone onto have significance in the neo-Nazi community in terms of a code for a 'Heil Hitler']. I thought, 'Oh shit,' about the 88 thing and what are people gonna think. And I thought, when it comes? I'm a purist in art, man, and I thought, 'Well, I'm not gonna just cancel the idea because a few people might think, 'Oh wait, that might be?' No. Because it's 88 millimeter."

About working with cover artist Antichrist Kramer: "And I'll repeat it: He is not a white supremacist. He has worked with Nyogthaeblisz, which is a Mexican-American black metal somewhat noise project. They're not noise, but it's a very extreme black metal. He works with Black Witchery, where the singer is half-Colombian like myself. He's great friends with them. Uh, he was friends with Blasphemy. Blasphemy has an African-American, we all know about him, the guitar player, he's a great guy. And I mean, you know, he's not a white supremacist. What bothers me is that you can tell people all you want about Kramer not being white supremacist-they don't want to believe it. Because they think that some white supremacists have the ability to be friends with other racists, but still have their own beliefs. But that's not truly white supremacy, man. It is not."

[Also thanks to Marcel Hubregtse for the tip!]

In related news, MetalSucks is also reporting today that Inquisition frontman Dagon has plead guilty to child pornography charges in 2009, according to official documents from the Superior Court of Washington for Snohomish County.

The documents, which are a matter of public record, state that NCMEC (the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children) became aware of an account uploading sexually explicit photographs of "young females in their early teens or pre-teens" in November of 2006.

Weirbach was charged with Possession of Depictions of a Minor Engaged in Sexually Explicit Conduct in December of 2008; in June of 2009, his attorney was able to strike a bargain with prosecutors, whereupon Weirbach plead guilty to Unlawful Display of Sexually Explicit Material and Obstructing a Law Enforcement Officer. In exchange, the prosecutor recommended thirty days in jail with credit for time already served, roughly $1,000 in fines, and two years of probation, which included limited access to the Internet as well as counseling.

MetalSucks say that they reached out to Season of Mist for comment on the child pornography charges yesterday morning, and were told in the afternoon that the label is no longer working with the band.

In response to the above, Dagon released the following statement on Inquisition's Facebook page:

"To all fans, supporters and close ones, I would like to clarify some horrific misinformation generated by the webzine Metalsucks of a personal matter of mine in 2007: First you must take into account, everything Metalsucks published is taken from court documents that state charges and accusations rather than what was proven or admitted in 2007. Second, I never plead guilty to the charges and the original charges were dropped after the courts examined all evidence. I am not a sex offender, and I was absolutely innocent of all charges. The plea bargain was something the prosecutor insisted on and for the defense was the best option to end a lengthy legal process. Also, the background check webpage circulating is not entirely correct, it is definitely not showing what the Police background check would show you. With my fullest respect to you, please read my statement Metalsucks had told me they would publish:

"I made a very unwise choice of actions in 2007 which got me into some legal problems. After the investigation was conducted, a year and a half later after the initial charges, the original charges brought against me were dropped and a plea deal was presented to me. The investigation determined I did not have anything that fell under the original charge.

"The police report suggested I had deleted and obstructed evidence which I deny to have done, however the obstruction charge was still part of the plea deal as was the other charge mentioned in this article. That second charge is related to viewing pornography in a public area, and again was taken as part of the plea deal. To be clear, I have no sex crimes, this did not involve any other person other than myself and I have moved forward since 2009 while having complied with all aspects of the law.

"I wish to remain focused on my music and my absolute dedication to the art of Black Metal. Despite any personal views and judgments the followers and supporters of our music may have, I am a somewhat private person and have never cared for destructive sensationalism and keeping what I feel is private, private.

"I hope my level of transparency is understood and I thank you, as always for having been so supportive of Inquisition. With much respect to you, Dagon."

Update March 28, 2018:

Inquisition has now been dropped off from the line-up for this year's Maryland Deathfest. The band also made the following statement in regards to the upcoming tour with Satyricon:

"Inquisition extends its appreciation to all fans and individuals who have supported us throughtout its career. A thank you will never be enough to express our level of regard to you.

Inquisition has been dropped from the Satyricon tour.

Inquisition will continue; in the mean time we respect everyone's position and will allow time to control the chaos over its own horizons into its own order.

Once again our greatest level of appreciation to you."

He has nazi tattoos, I don't need to hear some bullshit hand-wringing statement about how he's not a racist. If he HAD learned his lessons he'd have the tattoos covered because he'd be ashamed to have the stamp of a racist idiot on him. Good riddance and excellent handling by Season Of Mist.

i think the text is written a bit wonky, i think they where talking about Gallants nazi tattoos, not Dagons

I also read it as the bus driver having the nazi tattoos as he was a rehabilitated white supremacist. But as said above me, that is kind of unclear.

Something new must have popped up recently that is unreleased. On Metalsucks their latest news on him goes back to his conviction of child pornography, which was in 2009.

the tattoos the article is talking about are Gallant's (the bus driver) and not Dagon's and the text has been updated to avoid any confusion

His statement about the child pornography issue does not clarify much and I find the sentence "I made a very unwise choice of actions in 2007 which got me into some legal problems" very suspicious. The way I read this, he admits to viewing child pornography but denies being a sex offender himself. However, this doesn't change much; watching child porn doesn't make you less sick than actually having sex with children and it is also a felony in every civilized and developed country.

This like the Bermuda triangle, plenty of mysticism, drama and bonehead approaches. Metalsucks is more like a troll magazine so I always view their articles with a raised eye-brow. They seem more like a metal version of a tabloid, looking constantly for scandal so I wouldn't be surprised if they distorted the truth. However, Dagon does come a little bit suspicious in his statement. How about clarifying what wrong choices did you make in 2007?

Until someone brings up some legal documents as proof, we will have no idea how things really were.

All the legal documents are available here. I'll give you the tl;dr version: Dagon chose to plead guilty for a lesser offense because it was proposed to him and he and his lawyer thought it would be better than going to trial. The charges he plead guilty for were a) Unlawful Display of Sexually Explicit Material (whatever that means) and b) Obstructing a Law Enforcement Officer.

Dagon was obliged to have Cognitive Behavioural Sex Offender Treatment participating in a group for 3 years and the documents show that he completed it successfully. I know it's irrelevant, but in my mind the fact that all these therapy evaluation documents can be publicized legally shows that you have some pretty fucked-up laws in the US. There are details about his personal life and his relationship with his wife there for fuck's sake.

In his Facebook page he has replied to many angry comments by saying that he was addicted to adult porn (although the statement itself did not say that) and that it was adult girls he was watching. However, I don't understand why you have to undergo 3 years of treatment for watching adult porn. It doesn't make sense.

The fact of the matter is that there was viewing of nude children by the account "Elizadiaz2000" from Dagon's IP address and this is what he was initially charged with. It was 2007 so pretending to be a girl born in 2000 would probably get him other girls that age to show their naked body if he asked correctly.

Judge for yourselves.

Puritan US ftw, I guess.
Remember last month, when Florida's lawmakers refused to discuss assault rifle for people less than 21 yo, but legally named porn to be a danger for teenager's mental health?

I'm more appalled at the quality of this article than the news of them getting booted from SoM. Only the first two sentences (one of which is a direct quote) and Dagon's statement are facts. Everything else is pure speculation drama, quoting sources like MetalSucks for old news that may not be remotely related to this incident.

If you look up the court documents it has a list of titles he downloaded off of Limewire and one was called: 2 year old raped during diaper change.

There were 3 more titles that were disgusting, but nowhere near this. If you want the link simply go to Metalsucks and view both stories they have done about this.

If this was public, one might wonder why it resurfaces now, 10 years later.
Obviously due to the PC wave sweeping through the metal community, but don't say it too loud

As abhorrent as pedofile material posession might be, if Dagon got a sentence and is at peace with justice, I'll just let the man carry on with his life if he learnt his lesson. I don't get the eternal stigmatization concept or the impossibility to dissociate the actions/crime from the music/whatever you do.

Btw, if someone doesn't want their Inquisitions album, feel free to send them to me before throwing them away

"According to Dagon, he did have a conversation about Gallant's Nazi tattoos" Dagon doesn't have the tattoos. The David Gallant, the man accusing them of being Nazi sympathizers has the tattoo. I wouldn't trust a former Nazi's word about anything. You should really consider working on your reading comprehension.

I dont know him and wasnt referencing his supposed tattoos. I was also not necessarily calling him a nazi. I was pointing out how his speech patterns come off. Plain and simple. Espefially in regards to a subject like this, if you are going to make a public statement then atleast make an effort to appear intelligent AND educated. You achieve fuck all one way or the other if you come off like a burn out.

In what way or form is this a "wave" again?

We've seen quite recently an intention of targeting certain metal bands in order to ban them. A lot in the US. Marduk, Bölzer, Taake, Watain, D666... this is also fairly new, hence why I use the term "wave" though "trend" or whatever other similar word may be used.
These bands had no problems playing not long ago (ex: Marduk toured many times) but somehow it is only during the last year more or less that we see this targeted accusation that aren't always justified (ex: Bolzer). And even if they are justified, like in this case Inquisition, why only bring it up now?
As I said above, this has been public for a decade but somehow it is a big deal only now. Or Taake touring in 2016 was fine but in 2018 it is soooooo controversial.
Basically, I have the impression, through multiple examples, that there is a wave/trend/movement/whatever to dig up shit or fabricate it if required in order to ban music, whereas only 2 years ago, those same people didn't seem to care that much of our moral and ethical safety, telling us what should we listen or not.

I dunno, bands were always banned from stuff when they did something really shady. For years. Like, nsbm bands in particular. There just seems to be some buzz now around the larger ones not being as clean as people make them out to be.
And if you think back even longer, dunno if childporn was that well received during the 80s. I doubt it. Honestly "this is fine" was more of a wave to me. Not that it matters much with all the guys still selling records.

While this is true, you can't deny he's still a pedo and a Nazi, and therefore a massive asshole.

Most of the info that's been released about black metal bands and their political leanings is true, regardless of the original investigation being part of a ideological witch hunt of sorts. The question is whether certain BM artists' stupid behaviours is enough to turn people away from listening to their music.
